About the Author
Christine Iverson Bennett is Professor Emerita in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Indiana University. She earned her B.A. in sociology at Northwestern University, her M.A. in social studies education at Stanford University, and her Ph.D. in social science education with specializations in ethnic studies at the University of Texas in Austin. Prior to her doctoral studies she taught high school social studies in San Jose and Los Angeles. During her thirty-one years at Indiana University, Professor Bennett developed and taught graduate and undergraduate courses in multicultural education; and initiated and directed The Teacher as Decision Maker Program, The Research Institute on Teacher Education, and Project TEAM, a program to recruit and support students from underrepresented minorities. She also served as director of Indiana University's Exchange Program with Hangzhou University and conducted seminars for faculty at Al-Ain University in the United Arab Emirates and for visiting international scholars at Indiana University. Her research publications focus on the impact of multicultural social studies, classroom climates in desegregated schools, racial inequities in school discipline, racial issues in higher education, and multicultural teacher education. David Adger is Reader in Linguistics at Queen Mary, University of London. He is the co-editor of Specifiers: Minimalist Perspective (OUP, 1999) and publishes widely in syntax and semantics. He is co-general editor of the series Oxford Studies in Theoretical Linguistics.

Not an entry level text

We used this book as a text for a 400 level undergraduate advanced syntax course this summer (2004). Part of the purpose of the course was to evaluate the suitability of this book as a text (and minimalism as content material) for linguistics majors taking a 200 level syntax class in the future.

The book is highly technical, as is any serious linguistics text. According to the description, it is designed for readers with no linguistics background, but we were unable to imagine it being used as a text for any class beneath the level of ours. It probably would be more appropriate for use in a graduate seminar. There is no way it could be used for freshman with no linguistics background, and at the 300 level, English majors would be hung out to dry.

Issues? Lots of them made the book's arguments and logic hard to grasp. You're following with difficulty, reading and rereading as a concept is developed, and suddenly you realize one of the definitions you were given at the beginning has been completely changed, with no indication or explanation.

The book was full of obscure examples, which raised more questions than it answered at times, because common examples don't fit in the paradigm.

Examples of tree structure were very limited, showing only fragments of trees, which made the exercises at the end of the chapter extraordinarily difficult and time-consuming.

The last chapter seemed to be written as an afterthought. I think if the author had reread his examples, he would have seen that the verbs he had used as examples in his comparison were in no way functionally equivalent, although he seemed to be under the impression they were.

Proofreading would have been helpful, as there were lots of typos, some of which changed the meaning of the text or examples.

Some of us ended up wondering the extent to which the problems were with the book, and the extent to which they were with minimalism itself.

A disappointing book

I'm taking an introductory syntax course and using this book. The book is too wordy and at the same time overuses abstract concepts that are just introduced mostly without examples which could have made the text understandable. The author refers you to different chapters from the very beginning to understand each concept making you feel overwhelmed. He could just explain things simply, move on and get to other points when it's the right time. The concepts are easily understandable when a teacher explains them to me but this book just makes me feel I'm stupid. I have never found a book this difficult and don't really know why my teacher asked us to purchase this for an introductory course in syntax.

Interesting but confusing

The other reviewer is absolutely right--this text is NOT an entry-level text, even though it claims to be. I have an M.A. in linguistics and am currently working on a Ph.D., and I have some background in syntax, and I find this text quite difficult to follow. Some examples Adger lists as ungrammatical are grammatical, and vice versa. Adger seems to sometimes make claims without adequate explanation to the reader (e.g., he lists Adjective as [+Verb, -Noun]), which is disturbing because this is supposedly an introductory text. If you want an introduction to Minimalism, don't look here. If you're already a specialist in the field, this may be a good addition to you're collection (but you should be the judge of that--check it out from the library first).

great book

That's not only a complete review about cardiac anesthesiology, it's a complete book about everything around the heart (physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, etc). Even it's not a big book, it is user friendly, going to the essentials without missing anything important.
The autors did a great job, resuming in several chapters cardiac anesthesia and more in a not to long way ideal for the clinician.
Much more better than "a practical approach to cardiac anesthesia" from F. A. Hensley which is unreadable because of the presentation. Kaplan's book is colored with enough images to illustrate the text.
This book is not only for anesthesiologist, but also for critical care physicians.

Fantastic Read

Honestly, I chose “The Feathered Bone” because it was one of the choices that was still offered as a “real life, hold in my hand, tangible” book. After reading through the first few pages, I wondered if I would like this story because I felt that the author’s descriptions of the surroundings and goings-on bogged down the tale. But, I muscled through. And I am glad I did.
“The Feathered Bone” addresses a few of the tragic issues facing our Country today. One of those is the atrocity of human trafficking. The author weaves together a story that prompts the reader to sit on the edge of his seat. But, it’s not a story for the faint of heart.
The horror of human trafficking coupled with an unexpected tragedy, brought tears to my eyes. In fact, at one point I laid the book aside to pick up a few groceries at the store. As I pushed the cart up and down the aisles, I hoped the scene I left was only a horrific nightmare. Yes, the author did that good of story telling to draw me in.
I look forward to reading other books by Julie Cantrell.

Read this entire novel in two sittings - it's a beautiful tribute to love, loss, and faith. Cantrell is indeed on her best game with this new novel. The descriptions of New Orleans are lovely and spot-on, as well! Highly recommend.

The Feathered Bone Holds you right from page one. Love New Orleans and Julie captures the drama, mystery and flavor of New Orleans. The drama builds and becomes more intense with each page. Easy to read and follow, not convoluted with too many characters or places. VERY spell binding as is New Orleans. Characters you can relate to, places you can 'see', and a story you wont forget. Love you Julie!

Quiero decirles que esta es la historia mas interesante que he leido en toda mi vida. Se trata de Sinuhe, un doctor egipcio exiliado que escribe su vida, desde su nacimiento humilde hasta que llegue a atender los faraones. Este libro te hace pensar, te hace llorar, te hace reir, �lo tiene todo! Ademas, esta basado sobre hechos reales. El autor tuvo mas de 10 a�os estudiando la historia de Egipcio y los rollos de Sinuhe. Es interesante notar que a pesar del hecho que la historia trata de sucesos que pasaran hace unos 3.000 a�os, nosotros podemos identificarnos con todo. Espero que todo el mundo tenga el privilegio de leer esta obra maestra. (Este repaso se refiere al "The Egyptian", lo cual es la misma historia, pero en ingles.)

Resulta emocionante poder recorrer el Egipto de 3000 AC con una enorme cantidad de detalles, para los cuales Mika Waltari estudio muchos a�os la cultura egipcia. A partir de este libro se hizo una pelicula que es muy buena, pero el libro es realmente alucinante. Recomiendo este libro para aquellos que quieran conocer mas de la literatura de Mika Waltari.

Andy is a good writer, his book has helped me to understand how to get through teen life. I highly recommend this book to skateboarders and non
skateboarders. You should also check out his youtube channel and his online store to get skateboards and other high quality products

Awesome

Although Andy Schrock doesn't have the best writing abilities, the story is interesting and keeps me reading. The plot is very relatable, which makes it much more fun to read. Four chapters in after about 45 minutes. Continuing to read after I finish this review!

This book is going to be my Bible

I started watching Andy Schrock's YouTube videos about two and a half years ago, a little while after I started skating. Back then, he was working two jobs, tired, and seemingly miserable. In the time I've been watching, he's started his very own skateboard company, gotten a fiance, had a kid, and published this book. I'm on a perpetual quest to support whatever he does, so I naturally bought it. After having finished it today, I can honestly say this book is the single most relatable thing I have ever read. It's essentially autobiographical, but with obvious necessary dramatization. A large part of it revolves around coping with everyone around you changing, doing drugs, and "growing up" while you remain essentially the same, and sort of cling to your innocence and individuality. His only constant in life is his skateboarding. I think anybody that ever went through being a teenager has something to relate to it, but for a skateboarder, especially a dedicated, obsessive one, as I consider myself to be, it literally feels like I'm reading about myself. Just the thought of somebody else going through so many of the same experiences as me is absolutely therapeutic, and this is now my favorite book that I have ever read. Andy Schrock just made a lifelong supporter out of me.

Lani Lynn Vale never disappoints!

I have to admit that before this book, specifically during Apple's book I did not care much for Ridley, he was just an ass in my opinion... after reading Dirty Mother I find Ridley to be one of my favorite guys. He loves hard and although it took him a while to figure out his inner turmoil he always had Freya's best interests in mind. There were times I yelled at him to get his s@$t together, but there was no denying his feelings
Freya was this timid sad girl who came off as a pushover, but throughout the book you find yourself in awe of what a real bad ass she is! She may be scared to speak her mind but she proves she will do what she has to in order to keep her man alive! I love this couple hard!

Dirty and sweet

This is a great mix of dark and light. Freya is in a dark place. She has nothing to hold onto at this point in her life. And blow after blow keeps coming her way. In her darkest moments comes a ray of light by the name of Ridley. Ridley has his own demons to fight. Although he feels somewhat responsible for her brothers death he is too consumed with catching those responsible for the death of his wife to give Freya everything. Although this book deals with a heavier subject LLV still manages to bring us a book filled with love, understanding, respect and humor. I must also state that I love the two leading characters. Freya although meek she has no problem telling Ridley where to stick it. And Ridley doesn't play games and is brutality honest. Can't wait for the next one.

ANOTHER GREAT READ FROM LANI LYNN VALE

They may be members of the Uncertain Saints MC, but there is definitely no uncertainty about where the hearts of these men belong. This is the fifth installment in Lani Lynn Vale's MC series and once again she has kept my interest throughout the entire story. I'm really enjoying this series and I am looking forward to finally reading Wolfe's story in the final installment. But first, Dirty Mother. This was Ridley Walker and Freya Capone's story.

Ridley has taken a step back from relationships and women, due to the loss of his wife and child five years previous, under violent circumstances. His life has just become routine, until he meets Freya, the sister of one of his friends. He has such a huge instant attraction to Freya that he simply cannot get her out of his mind. Freya, is a woman with a gentle soul, who has been constantly bullied and put down by others throughout her entire life. Her chance meeting with Ridley and the death of her brother, brings out a strength that Freya has never shown before.

In the background there is a parallel story running, which involves the death of Ridley's wife. This part of the storyline is intriguing and confusing. Even though Ridley has mourned his wife for this entire time, he fails to tell Freya about her. The intriguing part comes, as Ridly must go undercover to help capture the man who killed his wife and child. How will this affect his growing relationship with Freya? Can he overcome the past to move on with his future?

All in all I enjoyed this story. Every now and then though, I did get a little confused with parts of the storyline as they didn't seem to match up with what Ms Vale had written in her previous novels in this series. But, it didn't really take away from what she portrayed in this one.

FOUR STARS as I still loved it.

The author knows everyone in telecommunications and has written previously about the cataclysmic changes we've seen in this field. But he's more than just a whiz-kid technocrat; he has insights about economics, society, and well-known industry characters that will knock your socks off. This is indispensable listening for people touched in any way by the communications revolution. Jeff Riggenbach's reading is both intense and understated. Though this is a longish work, the author's wry humor, as well as his confidence and grasp of his subject, will keep it on your front burner for the entire 12 hours.
