This is yet another of Betty Neels' charming tales of a brave, practical loving heroine who is living with two elderly aunts and making a living as best they can after suffering a severe setback in financial circumstances. Patience is a no-nonsense compassionate hard-working woman whose capabilities are finally recognized and appreciated by the Hero. You will be charmed by the heroine's love for her aunts and the way she protects them from the unpleasant aspects of their current life. You will laugh out loud when the adorable tyke involved in the story sticks out her tongue at the widow stalking our hero! :)

She cooks, cleans and types-my kind of woman.

The reviewer from Decatur, GA has described the plot. This is another good story from Betty Neels. It's just about the same plot--doctor, plain girl, beautiful villan(ess). The descriptions of England, Holland, and the various foods eaten are always interesting. All I can say against it is there is no sex, but that's not why I read Ms. Neels--I read them because most of the time the heroine is plain and she gets the prince.

Clean, Practical, Fun, Cute. Classic Betty Neels.

Patience Martin has two elderly aunts who struggle with the idea that a pound does not go as far as it once did, a manor home she is trying to let to anyone who could afford it, a small town home she is letting from someone else, and few skills marketable in her small home town. At first, prospects seem dim to her, until she learns that a tenant has let the manor home for six months, and is willing to hire her as a liason between his housekeeper and the townspeople. The tenant's dog is agreeable, but the tenant and his housekeeper are not. Fortunately, practical Patience can put up with anything. A snow storm, a manuscript in a poor hand, an adventure in the big city, a trip to the Netherlands, and a disappointment later, life seems no longer so dim.

The overall descriptor for this book is "darling." For those more accustomed to racing hearts and dramatic plot twists, it will seem very vanilla. For those seeking it, it presents a refreshing break from the current tendencies of romance toward erotica.

The pace is very measured. The reader cannot predict very little of what happens, but, as such, the continuity is flawless and the progression highly logical. Though Patience does not experience dire agony, the pain and worry she feels translates as very real to the reader.

There is but one flaw in the book, and it is more a flaw produced by the progression of time than by the story. Anyone who has ever read any Georgette Heyer may have experienced the same thing: the heroine seems to have very little in the way of ultimate control over her circumstances. Now dwelling in a world of self-made men and women, a reader must make an effort to revert to a 1940s and 1950s mindset to avoid asking questions of "Why did she not do/say this?"

Enjoy reading this book. It is quite worth the effort.

Outstanding German usage guide

This book is outstanding for native English speakers looking to acquire fluency in German. Although it seems to be aimed at the advanced learner, I'd guess pretty much anyone after the 2nd year of study (high school) would profit from it, because of how it explains the differences and relationships in actual usage There are many categories of usage and many examples - English and German phrases compared with each other, with detailed explanations. Note that this is a usage guide and, while certainly informed with explanations about grammatical details, it is not a German grammar. For that I would strongly recommend Durrell's other 2 excellent books, 'Essential German Grammar' and (of course), the classic 'Hammer's German Grammar and Usage'. The latter is usually said to be aimed at advanced (i.e. after 3rd year at university level) learners, but it is also an excellent reference work for anyone attempting to attain fluency and looking to understand the subtle nuances of German. I have the 2nd edition; fortunately or unfortunately, depending on your point of view, each edition seems to differ from the others, not only in content (i.e. additional information) but also layout and organisation. This makes them slightly different books, so what I'm saying is, a real 'crack' might like to have a copy of each, since they're kind of complementary (at least that's my impression).

Good, but the content is eventually duplicated

What I like about this book:

This book has a hugely varied collection of useful pieces of language information. In fact, as a single volume, this is a very efficient use of space for a lot of information. As the first steps from going from a beginner to intermediate or further, it is excellent.

What I dislike about this book:

Unfortunately, there is little unique content in the book. By that, I mean that the specialised book on each subject usually gives a fuller description than is contained here. Of the 6 chapters, most are covered in greater detail elsewhere.

Words (Chapter 2) - splitting synonyms, Farrell or Beaton
- False friends, there are a number of books exclusively devoted to these. Have a look at Fagan's bibliography for a good list.
- Word formation, mostly duplicated from Hammer's
- idioms, Some cheap guides are out there, as is the real thing
- prepositions, this section is quite detailed. Some books do better but for a comparative look, this section is quite good.
- particles, Hammer's is good here, or you could go the whole hog.
Grammatical information (chapters 3-5) - mostly cut down version of useful sections from Hammer's German Grammar and Usage
Spelling and punctuation (chapter 6) - get it from the horse's mouth in Richtiges und Gutes Deutsch or from the chapter in Hammer's.

And so on. That is not to say that any of the information here is not worth your time, but simply, as your collection grows, it will eventually become duplicated and you will find yourself rarely using it.

Where to from here:

If you have a grammar, dictionary and that is about it, this book would be great for you. It starts introducing you to and providing explanations for a whole lot of problem areas that you will encounter in your German language study. If, however, you have an enormous library of resources, there is little new in this volume.

I was totally surprised by the wealth of useful information in this book.

Most all German books explain the basics of the German language. However, German in common use is so complex due to colloquialisms. This book breaks down all the strange uses of words simplified in other German language texts, as well as providing great coverage of the different dialects across European German. It's definitely meant for an intermediate or advanced German student, preferably for those wanting to go overseas and mingle amongst Germans.

About the Author

Gabriel Garc�a M�rquez was born in 1927 in the town of Aracataca, Columbia.Latin America's preeminent man of letters, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1982. Garc�a M�rquez began his writing career as a journalist and is the author of numerous other works of fiction and nonfiction, including the novels The Autumn of the Patriarch and Love in the Time of Cholera, and the autobiography Living to Tell the Tale. There has been resounding acclaim for his life's work since he passed away in April 2014.

Incredible, as always!

Gabo is something else. He is, to put it simply, an astounding writer, with a verve of language and a capacity for fleshing out great characters and fantastic stories unparalleled by any living writer. I daresay he is the best living writer, at least of those who are famous, and I doubt many who read him would disagree that he is at least among the best.

This collection of stories draws upon several other volumes, and spans a fair portion of his very long career (may he live a thousand more years!). If you have read any Garcia Marquez, you will love these little gems as much as you loved his novels-- I enjoyed "Innocent Erendira", "The Very Old Man" and "The Handsomest Drowned Sailor" best of those I recall; sadly, my copy was lost so I don't have a reference at hand.

If you have not read any Garcia Marquez: first, I recommend you do so IMMEDIATELY... there is a reason he is quite famous and a reason he is so renowned; both are very just. This volume is a nice starting point, a gateway drug into the wonderful world of Gabo. Work backwards: the early tales are good, but do not exemplify Garcia Marquez at his fullest strength, and to really appreciate him in the beginning you should really read him at his fullest capacity.

You will almost assuredly devour this little volume and end up begging for more. I recommend, of course, ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF SOLITUDE (his masterpiece, and worth reading no matter what you think of his other works!!!), LOVE IN THE TIME OF CHOLERA, his COLLECTED NOVELLAS, and his more recent STRANGE PILGRIMS, which is another excellent collection of short stories.

But what are you doing reading my review? Get this book and any other Garcia Marquez you can get your hands on, and read, read, read!

Highly Recommend This Short Story Collection: Good Reading.

You might not like or understand every story, but this is a good read.

Gabriel Jos� de la Concordia Garc�a M�rquez(1927 - ), or simply Gabo as he was known, was born in Columbia. He started as a journalist, then he became an editor, and a publisher. He won the 1982 Nobel Prize in Literature. Garc�a M�rquez has lived mostly in Mexico and Europe and currently lives in Mexico City. The 80 years old author is credited with introducing or popularizing magical realism in modern literary fiction.

Some of his works have been classified as both fiction and non-fiction: Chronicle of a Death Foretold (Cr�nica de una muerte anunciada) (1981), tells the tale of a revenge killing, and Love in the Time of Cholera (El amor en los tiempos del c�lera) (1985), is loosely based on the story of his parents' courtship. Many of his works, including those two, take place in the "Garc�a M�rquez universe." The settings and characters are continued from one book to the next. The stories and novels cross genres and include magical realism: flying people, flying objects, the dead who can still think, etc. He has eight novels and numerous shorter works.

His novel One Hundred Years of Solitude (Cien a�os de soledad) (1967), has sold more than 36 million copies worldwide.

Based on his writings, it strikes the general that since he has written many short stories and only 8 novels, then it would be interesting to read some of his short stories. At the present time there are three books on the English market, although more have been printed. Five have been printed in the last 30 years, and three are still popular: the present book, The Collected Novellas, and Leaf Storm: and other Stories. Leaf storm has seven stories. The Collected Novellas has Leaf Storm plus two others: No One Writes to the Colonel and Chronicle of a Death Foretold.

The present book has the widest selection since it has 26 stories, long and short, that cover both realism and magical realism. Also, some are aimed at children. I enjoyed the collection and put it in the same class as Joyce's Dubliners, or similar in terms of enjoyment.

My only slight criticism is that his children's stories seem very adult. Some will be surprised with the realism and the lack of magic in many stories.

The book arrived today and I am amazed by the stunning aerial photographs in this book

Several months ago the Washington Post published a picture section with some of the pictures in Air by Vincent Laforet. After seeing them , I immediately had to find this book and purchase it. It had not yet been published but the publisher was taking orders. The book arrived today and I am amazed by the stunning aerial photographs in this book. The bulk of the photographs were taken at night, with a few taken at dusk, dawn, or during the day. Laforet captures all the color, detail and patterns of major cities throughout the world. They really convey the enormity of these large cities and present both macroscopic view and more microscopic views of the cities from the air. Some show the patterns, or lack of patterns, of the roadways and layout of the cities. Others show the skyscrapers taken from afar while others provide a closer view. The colors come from the myriad of lighting sources to produce a wide palette of vivid nighttime colors. I have always loved the old black & white photographs taken of New York City, but now seeing the city and its skyscrapers at night is even more thrilling.

The book itself is a coffee table book, measuring about 11" x15" and is quite hefty. It is printed on high quality paper. I mention this because Amazon incorrectly lists the size as being 5.9 x 0.9 x 8.3 inches. My only complaint about the book is that the pages do not lie flat. Many, if not most, pictures span two opposing pages and the curvature of the crease detracts from the visual impact of the photographs. The photographs were clearly taken with a very high resolution camera, which adds to the visual impact of the photographs. I showed the book to my wife and she, being very budget conscious, asked how much it cost. When I told her that it cost $59, she breathed a sigh of relief telling me that she though it cost over $100. Considering the quality of the photographs, this book is a real bargain. This book will likely appeal to photography aficionados and world travelers.

Photos were great; font not so much.

I too just received my copy of the book which I had preordered before publication. I'm a retired printer so naturally I checked out the quality of the printing and binding first and found both to be absolutely first class. No problem there. The paper stock used is appropriately heavy and opaque given that the photos were flooded with ink. Again, no problem.

The photos themselves were awesome! Reaction to art is highly personal so I won't comment too much on the photos except to say that the shots with shallow depth of field didn't always work for me. Printing photos across the gutter on a two page spread is doomed to be problematic and it was. The vast majority however were a marvel to view. I do have an objection to the type font and ink color choice used throughout, particularly the Foreword and Introduction, and that cost one star on how I rated the book. Using a thin, sans serif type and then printing in a shade of gray ink was a big mistake. Very artsy but not practical. It may work for some readers but I had to use a magnifying glass to read it.

I'll be proud to have this book on the coffee table.

This coffee-table book did not meet my expectations, especially after watching the CBS segment on Vincent Laforet. At the very least there could have been a small description accompanying each photo. Other than well-known landmarks far too much was left the reader to try to decipher what was photographed. I would not recommend this purchase to anyone. In fact, if I​ could, I would return it for a refund.
