Excellent overview of various ceramic processing techniques

I used this text in an undergraduate course on ceramic processing at Carnegie Mellon University. The author does an excellent job of describing the creation of ceramics from basic ore extraction and comminution to advanced forming, heat treatment, and post-processing.

Rahaman assumes a basic knowledge of materials science, but he still provides detailed, easy-to-follow descriptions of the various refining processes. In addition, he thoroughly explains all the images and figures provided in the text, helping the reader to fully comprehend their significance.

I would highly recommend this text to anyone seeking an understanding of the complex processes used to manufacture both basic and advanced ceramics.

very complete and dense

This is DEFINITELY a textbook, not light reading, but it is one of the most complete resources for ceramics and has been useful in several of my classes in Materials Science and Engineering. The density of information is very high but the chapters are nicely segregated - callbacks are made to previous material, but you don't usually have to go look it up to understand the current topic of focus - even the last chapters stand well on their own to someone with a good grasp of the fundamentals.

A great source of courage and comfort

In March of 1982, barely nine months after his 50th wedding anniversary, Rev. Lehman Strauss received the crushing news that his wife had been stricken by a massive stroke. While spending days, weeks and even months at his suffering wife’s side, Rev. Strauss learned that some trials in life go on very slowly indeed, and as we sometimes find ourselves in a doctor’s waiting room, we also sometimes find ourselves in God’s waiting room. “Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and He shall strengthen thine heart: Wait, I say, on the Lord.” (Psalm 27:14)

In this overwhelming book, written while Rev. Strauss and his wife were going through their time of testing, the author takes his vast knowledge of scripture, and organizes it into nine chapters of courage and comfort for those who are also waiting on the lord. As a husband who also has to wait beside a suffering wife, I have found this book to be a great source of courage and comfort. I highly recommend this book to anyone facing a trial in their life, one that requires not action, but quiescence.

Profoundly Instructive

Most of us who proudly identify ourselves as Christians pull back when it comes to pain and suffering. Despite being told we will suffer persecution and afflictions, we want a pass on pain. Not only does Lehman embrace his suffering, he does so seeking the face of God! He seeks understanding of it all from our great and loving God. And, because he seeks, he finds. Because he found, we, too, can mature in this important area of suffering. This is deep; it is real; it is beautiful and most instructive! It offers no short cuts, thank God!

Great practical and spiritual insight

Dr. Strauss has since gone Home to be with His Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. His legacy lives on through those lives he touched while here, and his books give those of us who desire a closer walk with God, an opportunity to partake of his wisdom. I am not presently going through suffering, but I know a lot of people who are. This book sheds light on the subject and allows the heart and mind to drink in some of the ways God works for our good when we can't understand "why me". Dr. Strauss writes, but God's Holy Spirit teaches and instructs us as we read with an openess to learn, trust, and obey God, and to lean and rest on His promises and His everlasting arms. God never makes mistakes and never has to say, "oops".

Dissatisfaction

On your website, it's advertised as a hardcover copy. But the book I received is a paperback. The actual reason that I purchased the book from you is that I couldn't find the hardcover at any bookstores around the campus even though it takes more time buying from you.

The biggest difference between hardcover and paperback is quality of contents. the quality is very important because this book contains numerous photographs as most of the geology books do.

A CURRENT AND RADICAL RETHINK ON CONTRACT LAW: AN IMPORTANT CONTRIBUTION TO THE DEBATE

Victor P. Goldberg, who writes this book, is Jerome L. Greene Professor of Transactional Law at Columbia University. His observations on contract law, which he generally approaches from an economic perspective – are meticulously argued and more often than not, radical.

How appropriate then, that this volume has been included as one of the latest titles in Edward Elgar’s ‘Rethinking Law’ series. Contract doctrines, which most regard as efficient, are, in Professor Goldberg’s view, terribly inefficient in many instances. Just how and why he reaches this conclusion is explained in detail in this thoughtful and analytical work, which is incorporates about a dozen (if you check the index) of the author’s previous essays and articles. Many of these have been revised and presented with new material as a follow-up.

As indicated by the title, the book focusses on how parties to a contract ‘design’ their contractual relations. With such an approach, says Goldberg, the reader can ‘glean… insights into doctrinal reform and contract interpretations.’

Conceivably such a stance is useful in the more complex contractual disputes, which don’t include those involving everyday consumer contracts, or ‘agreements between amateurs’. ‘For my purposes,’ says the author, ‘the category is defined by agreements for which both parties could be expected to have access to counsel.’

The subject matter of the essays contained in the book is diverse and illuminating, as numerous US cases are analysed with a view to reassessing key doctrines in contract law with a view to possible reforms. Yes, the context of the book is American, but its focus throughout is on contract design, as well as, in the words of the author, ‘the economic problems confronting contracting parties and the tools for coping with them.’

The book is divided into four sections to include direct damages… consequential damages… excuse and changed circumstances… (including the excuse doctrine)… and finally offer and acceptance, with reference to specific cases throughout. What seems to emerge throughout these discussions, as you would expect, are inconsistencies, controversies and debate.

For instance, in the first two sections of the book which focus on remedies, the example is cited of two cases in which a book publisher accepted an author’s manuscript, then refused to publish it. In one case, the unfortunate author received a nominal six cents; in the other case, the author won restitution for his or her time of over $300,000. (Sounds like the second author had a better lawyer!)

Certainly this book offers valuable insights and new perspectives on the often thorny problems of contract law as it can -- and does -- affect ‘sophisticated parties’. Lawyers as well as academics on both sides of the Atlantic will welcome the important contribution made here to the ongoing debates which rage continually within this core area of the law.

About the Author
Reginald H. Garrett was educated in the Baltimore city public schools and at the Johns Hopkins University, where he received his Ph.D. in biology in 1968. Since that time, he has conducted research and taught biochemistry courses at the University of Virginia, where he is currently Professor of Biology. He is the author of numerous papers and review articles on biochemical, genetic, and molecular biological aspects of inorganic nitrogen metabolism. His early research focused on the pathway of nitrate assimilation in filamentous fungi. His investigations contributed substantially to our understanding of the enzymology, genetics, and regulation of this major pathway of biological nitrogen acquisition. More recently, he has collaborated in systems approaches to the metabolic basis of nutrition-related diseases. His research has been supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and private industry. A member of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Garrett is a former Fulbright Scholar, was twice Visiting Scholar at the University of Cambridge, and was Invited Professor at the University of Toulouse, France.

Charles M. Grisham received his B.S. in chemistry from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1969 and his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Minnesota in 1973. Following a postdoctoral appointment at the Institute for Cancer Research in Philadelphia, he became Professor of Chemistry at the University of Virginia, where he teaches biochemistry, introductory chemistry, and physical chemistry. He has authored numerous papers and review articles on active transport of sodium, potassium, and calcium in mammalian systems, on protein kinase C, and on the applications of NMR and EPR spectroscopy to the study of biological systems. His work has been supported by the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the Muscular Dystrophy Association of America, the Research Corporation, the American Heart Association and the American Chemical Society. A member of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Grisham held the Knapp Chair in Chemistry in 1999 at the University of San Diego; was Visiting Scientist at the Aarhus University Institute of Physiology, Aarhus, Denmark, for two years; and received a Research Career Development Award from the National Institutes of Health.

About the Author
Tom Bassarear is a professor at Keene State College in New Hampshire. He received his BA from Claremont-McKenna College, his MA from Claremont Graduate School, and was awarded an Ed.D degree from the University of Massachusetts. Tom's complementary degrees in mathematics and educational psychology have strongly influenced his convictions about education--specifically, mathematics education. Before teaching at the college level, he taught both middle school and high school mathematics. Since arriving at Keene State College, Tom has spent many hours in elementary classrooms observing teachers and working with them in school and workshop settings, plus, he has taught 4th grade math every day for a semester at a local elementary school.

Meg Moss began teaching the mathematics for elementary school teachers course over 20 years ago. She obtained her MA in Math Education from Appalachian State University and her PhD in Math Teacher Education from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She has been actively involved in various roles, influencing teacher education training throughout her career.
