About the Author
David J. Ridges taught for the Church Educational System for thirty-five years and is in his twenty-fifth year of teaching at BYU Campus Education Week. He has taught adult religion classes and Know Your Religion classes for BYU Continuing Education for many years.

He has served as a curriculum writer for the Sunday School, as well as for the seminaries and institutes of religion of the Church. He has served in many callings in the Church, including gospel doctrine teacher, bishop, stake president, and patriarch. He and Sister Ridges served a full-time eighteen month mission, training senior CES missionaries and helping coordinate their assignments throughout the world. He is currently serving as the executive secretary for the Sunday School general presidency of the Church.

Brother Ridges and his wife, Janette, are the parents of six sons and daughters and make their home in Springville, Utah.

David Ridges writes clearly that a person's attitude towards the upheavals of the earth, the wars, and terrors around the earth in these times, etc. should not be frightening, rather bring a person to peace when we know we are doing our best to live as the wise virgins, preparing for the Last Days by trying to live as the scriptures teach. With a vast knowledge of the scriptures and an easy to follow approach, he leads you into a knowledge how these signs can be recognized as witnesses of a loving, kind Heavenly Father to help us be ready, not afraid.

A Valuable Resource for Hikers in the Smokies

This first edition contains some information that is omitted from the second edition, such as specific information about manways and abandoned trails. It also includes the time it takes to travel a particular trail, a feature missing from the second edition. Nonetheless, either edition is a great resource for a Smokies hiker. I particularly enjoyed the historic and cultural background information that goes well beyond a standard "trail guide."

The more you use it, the better it gets

I've owned my copy about a year. At first, I was a bit overwhelmed with the comprehensiveness. After using it to plan and go on two 3-night hikes in the GSMNP, I have come to greatly appreciate this book and especially its layout. Mr. Wise needs to be commended on the organization of the material. His trail descriptions are arranged by sections or watersheds, which corresponds to entries points to the Park. This allows the hiker to more easily plan since all the connecting trails descriptions are grouped together. I own three hiking trail books on the Smokies, and I keep coming back to this one.

Best hiking book.

Having many hiking books of the Smoky Mountains this is by far still the best one out there. The discriptions of the hike is why you buy this book. The discriptions tell you what you are looking at, history, and land. I look at other books and then reference this one as to what the hike really is like and what I am going to encounter and see along the way. Also there are hikes and places in this book you will not find in any other book for example: Mills Creek Falls Trail which cannot be found in any other book because this trail today is not a maintained trail in the park but is easily found and hiked. This may be an older book but is still the best. An oldie but still a goodie.

About the Author
Stefan Zweig was born in 1881 in Vienna, into a wealthy Austrian-Jewish family. He studied in Berlin and Vienna and was first known as a poet and translator, then as a biographer. Between the wars, Zweig was an international bestseller with a string of hugely popular novellas including Letter from an Unknown Woman, Amok and Fear. In 1934, with the rise of Nazism, he left Austria, and lived in London, Bath and New York-a period during which he produced his most celebrated works: his only novel, Beware of Pity, and his memoir, The World of Yesterday. He eventually settled in Brazil, where in 1942 he and his wife were found dead in an apparent double suicide. Much of his work is available from Pushkin Press.

Robert Specht is my grandfather

For my 13 birthday I was given a copy of "Tisha". I loved it! Not just because grandfather wrote it but because it is an inspiring story. The librarian and my teacher were very surprised to find out who I am. Everyone loves this book. It was written a long time ago, but is still read by adults and their children. When people travel to Chicken Alaska they buy the book and then they write a fan letter. My grandfather died 3 years ago. I am proud of his work.

This is a great account of how early life in Alaska truly was. My father mined with Fred Purdy from the late 30's till the war broke out and he enlisted. After he married my Mother they moved back to Chicken and my Mother became a close friend to Anne. While Fred and Anne adopted other children over the years they always had a house full of everyone else's children too, a sign of their loving and open nature. The flavor of this book reflects the bias of the "Outsiders" to the local natives that still runs uneasily under a more modern and progressive time.

Young teacher goes to Alaska

In 1927 young Anne Hobbs goes to Alaska to be a teacher and to have an adventure. Having no family left in Colorado, she seeks to do something special as her beloved grandmother predicted she would. She finds life difficult because of inclement weather and a lack of conveniences, but the biggest problem she faces is that of prejudice. She seeks to teach and befriend all of the people in the small town of Chicken, Alaska, where she lives but she soon discovers that her kindness towards Indian children raises the ire of the white people in the town. She has to face up to the local school board and the town's people before she is allowed to teach Indians in her school. As if that isn't bad enough she ends up falling in love with a "half-breed" and adopting some mixed-race children. This book is full of adventure and real insight into what it was like to live in Alaska in the 20's. It is also a triumphant story of one woman's love and her persistance in encouraging justice in her small Alaska town.

Colfer Takes Alex and Connor's Adventure to the Next Level!

Olivia's Review; I've eagerly anticipated this next installment in the Land of Stories, and it hasn't disappointed! The characters were all spot-on, and I loved getting to see Connor's imagination through his stories and how they reflected the Bailey twins's adventures. The writing was humorous and fast-paced - there was never a slow moment in the story. The plot was exciting and suspenseful, a perfect read for kids of all ages. I fell in love with this series a while ago and am thrilled that there will, indeed, be another book in the series after this one. Overall, an exciting, action-packed, super creative, funny, clever fifth installment to the Land of Stories!

Oscar's Review: I really loved this book. In every chapter when you thought something was going well, the ship would sink and everything would be submerged and the story would be shaken. I really don't have that much to say about this book because I love it so much, but I do have one thing: most who read this book will love it as they've loved, in turn, the first, second, third, and fourth books in the series. There was also a HUGE, interesting, and unexpected twist that really shook up the story and increased the suspense and excitement levels by a tenfold. I think this book would really appeal to reluctant readers because it is an action-packed, fast-paced fantasy story that pulls you into the book from the start.

Fun, Witty Book Series

We have a tween who is absolutely in love with this series. Great gift idea for anyone who enjoys fantasy type books (Tuesdays at the Castle, Harry Potter, Ever After High, Princess Academy etc.). We are quite careful to make sure content is age appropriate for our tween (with an 11th grade reading level) and have found these books to entertain without worry of introducing subjects too adult at this point. All the stories revolve around a brother and sister who find themselves actually inside a fairy tale land and coming into contact with/relying on/fleeing from story book characters they grew up reading about. They are witty books and hard to put down; our veracious reader finishes them within 24 hours of getting them. Highly recommend.

This book series is amazing!!! It is so creative and imaginative, with comedy and adventure, danger and drama and magic, deeply thought out characters, and vivid descriptions! It is engaging and draws you in from the very beginning of the first book of the series. The entire world that the author has created is so original, complex but clear, and complete, it feels real!!! It is an exciting and fun read. Best of all, one of the best things about this series is that, unlike many others, each book is just as fantastic as the next!!!! You will be right there with the characters on their journey from start to finish, and as soon as you reach the end of each book you will be just dying to begin the next!!!

In this meticulous study, Adam Schwartz in turn questions the new orthodoxy. Departing from a detailed scrutiny of hoplite equipment and its physical characteristics, the author demonstrates that this equipment must in fact have been developed specifically to meet the needs of warriors fighting in phalanx formations, which, it is shown, can be traced back into the eighth century BC.

Excellent but Pricey!

Adam Schwartz's Reinstating the Hoplite is an excellent book, though rather expensive for what it delivers. In truth, I think that the hoplite's position is probably not so precarious as to really need 'reinstating' (at least here in the USA, where Victor Hanson's high valuation of that warrior type and its phalanx seems to define orthodoxy, he having recently taught at West Point and studies of similiar opinion currently being referenced by the Army's Infantry School at Fort Benning, GA). Nonetheless, Swartz here offers a most welcome defence of the primacy these themes had in ancient Greek battle that's both vigorous and very well researched.

After some introductory material (24 pages), the book gives an in-depth (77 page) evaluation of hoplite equipment (defensive and offensive) in support of the idea that it was developed specifically to support the phalanx. This is followed by a similarly detailed review (99 pages) of the phalanx and then a discussion on the duration of hoplite battles (25 pages), ending with a brief (9 page) summary of the author's conclusions. Among Schwartz's major contentions are: a) the phalanx existed prior to the development of hoplite equipment, which was designed specifically for use in that array; b) intentional pushing (known as 'othismos') was real, a physical shoving from the entire formation that combined with weapon strikes along the front to define the offensive capability of the phalanx; c) there was very little change in the nature of phalanx warfare from its inception in the late 8th century B.C. into the late 4th century B.C. Appended is an inventory of 41 battles (40 on land plus one naval action) selected from the period 490 B.C. (Marathon) to 338 B.C. (Chaironeia), each with a systematic listing of important characteristics. There is an extensive bibliography, a list of illustrations (there are 19), a 14-page general index, and indices of sources (one literary and the other for inscriptions and papyri).

Schwartz is a sound wordsmith, with writing that is both clear, concise, and obviously meant to embrace general readers despite the study's origins as an academic work. For the most part, he maintains a reasoned, patient tone, which makes his well-mounted arguments all the more convincing, though he still offers the occasional brief burst of passion to let the reader know that his heart is in the subject. An outstanding feature that Schwartz provides is an English translation for every major quote (and most minor ones) from German, Latin, and Greeks sources.

The book has few real weaknesses. One, however, is that it apparently went to the publisher early in 2007, thus it couldn't include information from Paul Bardunias' ground-breaking article on the hoplite shield (aspis) and othismos that was publshed in Ancient Warfare magazine later that year (Oct.). This is a true pity, as the concepts therein would have greatly bolstered Swartz's positions regarding othismos on several fronts. Thus, while the ovewhelming literary and logical support for a real, physical othismos is firmly established by Schwartz in effective arguments against its detractors, the 'smoking gun' mechanism that Bardunias' work might have provided is unfortunately lacking. Another weak point stems from what is otherwise a strength - strong academic roots. While Schwartz's book gives us access to a great deal of vital data from academia, it tends to ignore information from other, more popular sources. Thus, there is no reference here to many works published by Osprey and others for a more general readership, which contain very valuable information relative to issues being discussed.

Overall, Reinstating the Hoplite offers an excellent introduction to hoplite battle while at the same time providing considerable deeper detail that should inform even the most well-steeped devotee. Still, given that I feel Victor Hanson's The Western Way of War does much the same at considerably lower cost, I wouldn't recommend Reinstating the Hoplite to the casually interested newcomer, but rather only for truly serious students of Greek warfare.

The title So You Created a Wormhole: The Time Traveler's Guide to Time Travel is an interesting and fun to read. It is also education because it discusses of physics and pop culture.
How would you otherwise learn how to create a battery out of dinosaur poop ... or similar issues! LOL!
This title gives you fun and helpful information how to survive during different times and the illustrations are also great!

Simply Outstanding

It is a humorous, contrarian, helpful, ambiguous, insightful, cautionary, and celebratory tale of travel through time.

The theory section of the book respectfully pulls from the [ahem] factual canon previously established in Back to the Future and Hot Tub Machine with just enough real-life "It's-shake-and-bake-and-I-helped" physics to make your head swim.

The wit is dry and the roaring fire off the destroyed remnants of the time machines of the hostile time travelers who lost their associated time battles is inviting.

Whether you advocate the riding of dinosaurs as does the book or the punching of dinosaurs as do other time travelling enthusiasts, you will find appropriate advice within its pages.

Bought the Kindle edition, because there's really no other way to read a book of the future that is also a book of the present and the past.

Thoroughly enjoyed.

I just bought this book and I was so excited to read it. I had read the reviews and this book sounded like a great one to purchase.
This book explains different methods how to survive when you time travel across the different centuries and how you can manage your time travel with the items available in each century.

These are the most essential to know when you time travel:
How to choose and build a time machine, what you need to know about the black holes and worm holes, what if you meet your doppelganger or a dinosaur or a robot...?

It's a hilarious! It's fun! You'll enjoy it if you are interested in scifi and time traveling.
