From 1941 to 1984, the United States achieved an amazing record of economic growth while witnessing the decline of its diplomacy and the fragmenting of its society. Author Chafe recounts the period in an exceptionally well-written study that bristles with telling anecdotes and quotations. His interpretation of events prior to 1968 is fairly routine but is supported with a sparkling density of statistical detail. William H. Chafe is Alice Mary Baldwin Professor of History at Duke University. He is the author or coeditor of several books, including Remembering Jim Crow: African Americans Tell About Life in the Segregated South (2008), The Rise and Fall of the American Century: The United States from 1890-2009 (OUP, 2007), A History of Our Time: Readings on Postwar America, Seventh Edition (OUP, 2007), Private Lives/Public Consequences: Personality and Politics in Modern America (2005), and Never Stop Running: Allard K. Lowenstein and the Struggle to Save American Liberalism (1998). He is a former president of the Organization of American Historians and his books have been recognized with the Robert F. Kennedy Book Award (1981), the Sidney Hillman Book Award (1994), and the Lillian Smith Book Award (2003).

Good, thorough survey

This is an excellent survey of U.S. history since World War II. Just about every topic imaginable is covered: the Cold War, the baby boom, McCarthyism, TV and popular culture in the 1950s, the civil rights movement, JFK, LBJ, the 1960s youth movement, Vietnam, Watergate, women's liberation, Reagan, Clinton, and even such recent events as 9/11, the war in Iraq, and Katrina.

One of the book's strengths is that one is able to see the onset (from the Cold War to the quest for social change) of much of the polarization in our current-day politics. One of the best chapters is devoted to the year 1968, a "watershed" year that author William Chafe refers to as "a time of horror, embitterment, despair, and agony." He skillfully describes the country literally coming apart at the seams: how several forces sought social change, and how Richard Nixon was able to exploit the anger and violence of the year to win the presidential election. We seem to have been fighting the culture wars ever since.

There are some weaknesses. As an editor by profession, I was annoyed to see Bull Connor referred to as Bull "Conner" on at least one occasion, and Helen Gahagan Douglas (Nixon's "pink lady") is referred to as Helen "Galagan" Douglas at least once in the text and even in the index. Chafe also mentions Hurricane Katrina hitting Louisiana in early September 2005, when it actually hit at the end of August. I also would have liked to have seen some topics discussed in greater length: Hiroshima, Nagasaki, and the assassinations of MLK and RFK almost seem to just get mentioned in passing. That being said, Chafe has a lot of ground to cover, and he crams a lot of information into about 600 pages.

(Strangely, Chafe also refers to historian Doris Kearns Goodwin as just Doris Kearns. Don't know what that's all about.)

All in all, though, this is a good, thorough survey of "the unfinished journey" of American history.

An excellent brief political history of the post WWII period

Chafe does a good job on selected topics;i.e., politics, civil rights and foreign policy. Weak on economics, technology, farm policy. Heavily dependent on some secondary sources like Doris Kearns Goodwin. Needs updating badly. 4th edition has been delayed for months.

Great Experience

This is much much more interesting than the average text book. I think this a book I'd like to keep around. There is something to be said about the clarity of hindsight and this text seems to have that. It also seems (and I do stress seems) to be a very balanced view of the history of the 'recent' past. I'm actually enjoying my assigned readings for a change

This study allows the hymnic sections to engage with the larger narrative issue as to who is truly the rightful sovereign of the universe.

A Well-written Dissertation That Deserves The Attention of The Chosen Few

Gentle Reader, this book, Revelation's Hymns, was not written with you in mind. It is a doctoral dissertation and it was written to persuade a doctrinal committee that the author had entirely researched his thesis. It is, in my opinion, a very well written, well researched, dissertation. But it also reads just like a dissertation. The implied reader (IR) has a thorough knowledge of Greek and the Old and New Testament, especially the book of Revelation and all recent scholarship. Almost no background to any of Professor Grabiner's argument is provided because his assumption is the (IR) implied reader already knows. I am very familiar with the book of Revelation. Yet I spent a good deal of time reading Revelation as I read Revelation's Hymns. I had to. Lacking the requisite scholastic background the casual reader will be inclined to put the book down and not pick it up again.

There is a reason why no one has looked before into the Cosmic Conflict in Revelation's hymns. It is not obviously there. The hymns are obviously about God's Sovereignty. If you want to find the Cosmic Conflict in Revelation's hymns as it relates to the fitness of God as Sovereign you have to arrive there by implication. The crux of Grabiner's dilemma is summed up on page forty; "The narrative also hints at Satan's primordial background." He then footnotes G.B. Caird: "however... 'the Bible knows nothing of the premundane fall of Satan'." However indeed.

The ἀποκάλυψις will not submit to timelines. You can try to stick one on, but it always falls off. Nobody has come up with the right glue. In summation: The Book of Revelation has The Lamb slain before the foundation of the world. Grabiner imposes sequencing on the text. He doesn't discover sequence in the text. He has lots of company. It isn't necessarily bad scholarship. But it does result in two-hundred and twenty-six pages of 'hints' 'implies' and 'alludes.'

Narrative Criticism - "It may be considered strange or anachronistic to apply modern literary-critical techniques to a text that is foundational for religious faith." (page 14) It may be and it is; but it has the virtue of being arguable. Arguing what the book of Revelation says is a lot easier than arguing what it means. Still, it is strange to read about the plot, motif, lief motif, dramatis personae, cameo appearances and the characters in the storyline. Satan is a character. Now that could be taken out of context. You get used to it and it isn't a pointless hermeneutic. Anything that makes the dissertation defensible is far from pointless. But this is not how William Miller studied the Book of Revelation.

Grabiner consistently points out the overwhelming "Jewishness" of Revelation and effectively argues against the more common interpretations of the hymns which look to secular, contemporary Roman events, to make sense of what John of Patmos is writing about. The centrality of the temple and the sanctuary and the heavenly throne room, rather than political and social realities of John's day are truly the interpretive keys.

If Grabiner's thesis defense has a weakness it is a tendency to impose on the hymns the Cosmic Conflict interpretation overlooking the simpler, more obvious, interpretation that God is absolutely Sovereign. Not that Grabiner has much choice, you got to do what you got to do, but I sometimes thought the point of the hymn was the Sovereignty of God, not the worthiness of God to be Sovereign. The only reason he sees the Cosmic Conflict in the text is because his thesis forces him to see something that isn't there; it can only be implied.

From the narrative critical perspective I think the text makes Satan a relatively flat character. Grabiner needs more a dynamic Satan to defend his thesis to substantiate the conflict - so he infers from the text some things that are far from obvious. Perhaps his inferences are correct - he didn't get them from the text.

In any case, the saints in Revelation are busy overcoming something. It ain't Imperial Rome. The Lamb is not a flat character. King of Kings and Lord of Lords, a vesture dipped in blood. He leads the armies of heaven. He is in Conflict with the old Serpent the Devil about something. The Conflict is undoubtedly of Cosmic dimensions and I have no better explanation than Grabiner's. I recommend his book to everyone. Ha ha ha. Everyone with enough background to make it readable. Professor Grabiner writes well. He has done everything he can to help you Gentle Reader. But Revelation's Hymns remains a dissertation. Let the unimplied reader (UIR) beware.

probably the worst book I ever read!!! a complete joke...besides all the misspellings, the content itself was quite questionable..it was just a rambling account of some clown that thinks the reader will believe anything he says..winning 4 cars in a few hours in Las Vegas ?? doubt that..he also states that he returned to Vegas after another road trip and went to either a horse track or dog track..problem with that is there are NO racetracks in Nevada!! can't recommend this one...a complete waste...Author should really have someone do a check on his questionable spelling...Michael C, Las Vegas

Eduard Mira (Valencia, 1945) holds a PhD in geography and history. He has been professor of sociology at the University of Alicante, visiting professor at the College of Europe (Bruges), and as a researcher, has been invited to the Fitzwillian College, Gonville, and Caius College at the University of Cambridge, and to King’s College at the University of London. He is member of the College of Experts on the Cultural Heritage, of the Council of Europe, and has acted as director of the Cervantes Institute in Naples and in Brussels. He is a member of the Academia Valenciana de la Lengua (AVL).�Eduard Mira (Valencia, 1945), es doctor en Geograf�a e Historia. Ha sido profesor de Sociolog�a en la Universidad de Alicante, profesor visitante en el Colegio de Europa (Brujas) e investigador invitado en el Fitzwillian College y en el Gonville and Caius College en la Universidad de Cambridge y en el King’s College, en la Universidad de Londres. Ha sido miembro del Colegio de Expertos en Patrimonio Cultural del Consejo de Europa y ha ejercido de director del Instituto Cervantes en N�poles y en Bruselas. If this book doesn't change your life...you're in trouble!

Truly, Life in Righteousness: The Word is Your Life should be mandatory for every Christian who desires a deeper understanding of who they are in Christ, and beyond that, for every Christian who is ready to walk in that understanding at a deeper level. Billie Miller has done an extraordinary job of taking us on a journey to obtaining what is already ours...in Christ. Not only does he paint vivid pictures by using real life experiences and relevant stories, but he also incorporates practical, hands-on steps, at the end of each chapter, to help us apply what we've learned! Listen - RUN...don't walk...this book is going to change your life!!!

One of the best books I have ever read!!!!

Life in Righteousness, The Word is Your Life has truly been a blessing in my life. If you feel stuck in your relationship with God and you are searching for a way to get your life headed in the right direction without feel overwhelmed, Billie Miller has a way of explaining and teaching God's word in a way anybody can understand. You will feel completely encouraged and realize just how much God loves you. From a CEO to a prison inmate this book is for you. I did not only by the Kindle version of this book but I bought the paperback copy as well. I am sure this book will do nothing but bless your life and allow you to see who you are in Christ. Great Book no matter where you are in your Walk as a Christian

My story is the story of a prodigal daughter... and I really appreciate this book because it is helping me stay focused. I love how it is supported by scripture (as any good Christian book would). I encourage everyone to read this book whether you are new in Christ, a prodigal son/daughter, or whether you a more seasoned/mature Christian. This book also makes for a great supplemental reading book to have as part of a bible study group. The fact that the author made it available in Kindle is what made it extra special because now... it can go anywhere in the world at the click of the button. AND It's only $5.95... get it today. :) Happy Reading.
