About the Author

Gabriel Garc�a M�rquez was born in 1927 in the town of Aracataca, Columbia.Latin America's preeminent man of letters, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1982. Garc�a M�rquez began his writing career as a journalist and is the author of numerous other works of fiction and nonfiction, including the novels The Autumn of the Patriarch and Love in the Time of Cholera, and the autobiography Living to Tell the Tale. There has been resounding acclaim for his life's work since he passed away in April 2014.

Incredible, as always!

Gabo is something else. He is, to put it simply, an astounding writer, with a verve of language and a capacity for fleshing out great characters and fantastic stories unparalleled by any living writer. I daresay he is the best living writer, at least of those who are famous, and I doubt many who read him would disagree that he is at least among the best.

This collection of stories draws upon several other volumes, and spans a fair portion of his very long career (may he live a thousand more years!). If you have read any Garcia Marquez, you will love these little gems as much as you loved his novels-- I enjoyed "Innocent Erendira", "The Very Old Man" and "The Handsomest Drowned Sailor" best of those I recall; sadly, my copy was lost so I don't have a reference at hand.

If you have not read any Garcia Marquez: first, I recommend you do so IMMEDIATELY... there is a reason he is quite famous and a reason he is so renowned; both are very just. This volume is a nice starting point, a gateway drug into the wonderful world of Gabo. Work backwards: the early tales are good, but do not exemplify Garcia Marquez at his fullest strength, and to really appreciate him in the beginning you should really read him at his fullest capacity.

You will almost assuredly devour this little volume and end up begging for more. I recommend, of course, ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF SOLITUDE (his masterpiece, and worth reading no matter what you think of his other works!!!), LOVE IN THE TIME OF CHOLERA, his COLLECTED NOVELLAS, and his more recent STRANGE PILGRIMS, which is another excellent collection of short stories.

But what are you doing reading my review? Get this book and any other Garcia Marquez you can get your hands on, and read, read, read!

Highly Recommend This Short Story Collection: Good Reading.

You might not like or understand every story, but this is a good read.

Gabriel Jos� de la Concordia Garc�a M�rquez(1927 - ), or simply Gabo as he was known, was born in Columbia. He started as a journalist, then he became an editor, and a publisher. He won the 1982 Nobel Prize in Literature. Garc�a M�rquez has lived mostly in Mexico and Europe and currently lives in Mexico City. The 80 years old author is credited with introducing or popularizing magical realism in modern literary fiction.

Some of his works have been classified as both fiction and non-fiction: Chronicle of a Death Foretold (Cr�nica de una muerte anunciada) (1981), tells the tale of a revenge killing, and Love in the Time of Cholera (El amor en los tiempos del c�lera) (1985), is loosely based on the story of his parents' courtship. Many of his works, including those two, take place in the "Garc�a M�rquez universe." The settings and characters are continued from one book to the next. The stories and novels cross genres and include magical realism: flying people, flying objects, the dead who can still think, etc. He has eight novels and numerous shorter works.

His novel One Hundred Years of Solitude (Cien a�os de soledad) (1967), has sold more than 36 million copies worldwide.

Based on his writings, it strikes the general that since he has written many short stories and only 8 novels, then it would be interesting to read some of his short stories. At the present time there are three books on the English market, although more have been printed. Five have been printed in the last 30 years, and three are still popular: the present book, The Collected Novellas, and Leaf Storm: and other Stories. Leaf storm has seven stories. The Collected Novellas has Leaf Storm plus two others: No One Writes to the Colonel and Chronicle of a Death Foretold.

The present book has the widest selection since it has 26 stories, long and short, that cover both realism and magical realism. Also, some are aimed at children. I enjoyed the collection and put it in the same class as Joyce's Dubliners, or similar in terms of enjoyment.

My only slight criticism is that his children's stories seem very adult. Some will be surprised with the realism and the lack of magic in many stories.

The book arrived today and I am amazed by the stunning aerial photographs in this book

Several months ago the Washington Post published a picture section with some of the pictures in Air by Vincent Laforet. After seeing them , I immediately had to find this book and purchase it. It had not yet been published but the publisher was taking orders. The book arrived today and I am amazed by the stunning aerial photographs in this book. The bulk of the photographs were taken at night, with a few taken at dusk, dawn, or during the day. Laforet captures all the color, detail and patterns of major cities throughout the world. They really convey the enormity of these large cities and present both macroscopic view and more microscopic views of the cities from the air. Some show the patterns, or lack of patterns, of the roadways and layout of the cities. Others show the skyscrapers taken from afar while others provide a closer view. The colors come from the myriad of lighting sources to produce a wide palette of vivid nighttime colors. I have always loved the old black & white photographs taken of New York City, but now seeing the city and its skyscrapers at night is even more thrilling.

The book itself is a coffee table book, measuring about 11" x15" and is quite hefty. It is printed on high quality paper. I mention this because Amazon incorrectly lists the size as being 5.9 x 0.9 x 8.3 inches. My only complaint about the book is that the pages do not lie flat. Many, if not most, pictures span two opposing pages and the curvature of the crease detracts from the visual impact of the photographs. The photographs were clearly taken with a very high resolution camera, which adds to the visual impact of the photographs. I showed the book to my wife and she, being very budget conscious, asked how much it cost. When I told her that it cost $59, she breathed a sigh of relief telling me that she though it cost over $100. Considering the quality of the photographs, this book is a real bargain. This book will likely appeal to photography aficionados and world travelers.

Photos were great; font not so much.

I too just received my copy of the book which I had preordered before publication. I'm a retired printer so naturally I checked out the quality of the printing and binding first and found both to be absolutely first class. No problem there. The paper stock used is appropriately heavy and opaque given that the photos were flooded with ink. Again, no problem.

The photos themselves were awesome! Reaction to art is highly personal so I won't comment too much on the photos except to say that the shots with shallow depth of field didn't always work for me. Printing photos across the gutter on a two page spread is doomed to be problematic and it was. The vast majority however were a marvel to view. I do have an objection to the type font and ink color choice used throughout, particularly the Foreword and Introduction, and that cost one star on how I rated the book. Using a thin, sans serif type and then printing in a shade of gray ink was a big mistake. Very artsy but not practical. It may work for some readers but I had to use a magnifying glass to read it.

I'll be proud to have this book on the coffee table.

This coffee-table book did not meet my expectations, especially after watching the CBS segment on Vincent Laforet. At the very least there could have been a small description accompanying each photo. Other than well-known landmarks far too much was left the reader to try to decipher what was photographed. I would not recommend this purchase to anyone. In fact, if I could, I would return it for a refund.

A Modern-Day Successor to H.G. Wells

The late Colin Kapp was a British writer of Science Fiction who was somewhat underappreciated by readers on this side of the Atlantic. Chief among his stories were those about the Unorthodox Engineers, a gang of misfits who practiced engineering in a manner that purists in the Engineering Reserve tended to resent, especially since this outlaw-like approach to the profession often led to outstanding results. All five of Kapp's stories about UE are in this work, along with three additional stories that are about more conventional sci-fi themes. Overall an excellent read, and some of the best work Kapp ever did. He had several more well-known novels which were all quite readable, and if another volume of Kapp works come out, I hope the stories include "Hunger Over Sweet Waters", "Lambda One", and "The Imagination Trap". Kapp used very pioneering ideas based on real science in his work, and it told well with very good integration into his stories. A

I bought this for just one story that I haven't been able to find since the 70's - "The Cloudbuilders". The rest of the book was a real treat. I will look up his other books.

Originally published in French (Belgium: Editions Consulaires, 1988. six vols.), this is the first of a planned four-volume English-language edition that pays tribute to women in Africa and the African diaspora from ancient times to the present. Volume 1 features 28 queens throughout Africa from prehistory to the 19th century. Guadeloupean novelist Schwarz-Bart (Between Two Worlds) has created a visually stunning and well-constructed book. Every page contains high-quality color reproductions, including many full- and double-page spreads, of rarely seen art works and images of African history and culture. The text consists of brief main entries, poetically written by Schwarz-Bart, interspersed with folktales, proverbs, songs, poems, and historical accounts selected by the author. The main entries are creative in tone and format rather than offering the academic and analytical narrative of historical writings. A chronological time line of when these women warriors, spiritual leaders, and politicians thrived would have been a wonderful complement to the stories and images. "In Praise of Black Women" is a gorgeously illustrated volume relating the lives of ancient African queens, rulers and warriors from pre-historic Africa through ancient Egypt up to the 19th century. Twenty-eight remarkable women are profiled here, all of whom had a lasting impact on their time. Here you will find Queen Tiye, the consort of Pharaoh Amenhotep III; Makeda, the legendary Queen of Sheba; Nandi, the mother of Shaka Zulu, and a host of other fascinating women. Superbly narrated by Simone Schwarz-Bart in the tradition of the oral historians of Africa, there are also historical sidebars on each page to bring the time and place into fuller perspective. This book is a magnificent tribute to the women of Africa and to all women of the African diaspora.

In Praise of Black Women: Ancient African Queens

This is a beautiful book for all generations. The book is broken down into short stories. There is extensive use of pictures and historical diagrams which makes each story interesting for adults and children. This book provides the reader with a true sense of who these women were. It is a wonderful book for all families, especially those with young girls and teenagers. I wish all students and teachers had access to this book. This is not just for the African-American population. American children receive too much of their learning from "acceptable history" books and the movies, both which perpetuate an inaccurate picture of much of the rest of the world. I know this book opened my eyes and expanded my view of history.
