Menuhin, who began as one of the most remarkable child prodigies since Mozart and, over his 83 years (1916- 1999), became a kind of musical elder statesman, has found his ideal biographer in Burton. The veteran BBC director and producer, who also wrote the best book to date about Leonard Bernstein a few years back, is friendly and fair, with a wry appreciation of Menuhin's comic aspects. Burton does a better job sorting out the chronology and the reality of Menuhin's spectacular boyhood successes than the violinist himself did in his eloquent memoir Unfinished Journey. Although his early successes were in San Francisco, Menuhin was born in the Bronx to ‚migr‚ Russian-Jewish parents who realized early their boy was a genius and seemed always in a quandary about how far his talent should be exploited. From the mid-1920s to the outbreak of WWII, Menuhin was one of the preeminent international virtuosos, though after the war many critics believe that his playing deteriorated. (Burton disputes this opinion, writing that there is no evidence of the violinist's decline until the 1970s.) Music was only one of Menuhin's passions, however. He was among the first in the West to espouse yoga and the principles of organic food; he established a notable school for young musicians; he became involved in high-level diplomatic maneuverings for UNESCO and in the Arab-Israeli dispute; and eventually he took up conducting. Burton relays these accomplishments with winning humor and a scrupulous attention to detail that should please musical scholars; the only flaw is the absence of a discography. B&w photos.

Menuhin (1916-99) was a child prodigy who developed into one of the greatest violinists of our age. His tireless work in his later years as a humanitarian and teacher earned him the honor of being considered one of the century's best-loved musicians. Burton, a BBC director and commentator and author of Leonard Bernstein, drew upon a 40-year association with Menuhin to create this richly detailed, always engrossing narrative. The biography is divided into five chronological sections. The subtitle of the fifth "I Was Born Old and Have Been Growing Younger Ever Since" is an apt summary of Menuhin's remarkable life and accomplishments, for it seems that as he aged and as his performing skills declined, he turned with indefatigable energy to myriad worthy projects. Burton stops well short of hagiography, however: the controversies in Menuhin's life personal, political, and musical are candidly dealt with. Each chapter ends with a listening list, which is very useful for tracing Menuhin's development as a performing artist at each successive stage of his career. Humphrey Burton is a distinguished television director and commentator who was twice in charge of Music and Arts for BBC Television. A founding member of London Weekend Television, he is artistic director for the Barbican Centre and author of the highly acclaimed Leonard Bernstein. He has won many international awards, including three from the British Academy, four Emmys, and the Italia Prize (for The Making of West Side Story). Burton worked with Yehudi Menuhin on a twenty-part radio series for Classic FM.

A Yardstick.

This book is probably the most comprehensive biography I have ever read. Humphrey Burton's study on Yehudi Menuhin's life-history is a yardstick by which all authors of biographies could and should measure themselves.

I was given this book as a gift several years ago and before I decided to read it, the paperback sat on my bookshelf with time gradually yellowing it's pages. It was only until recently when I obtained a DVD performance of Hepzibah Mehuhin playing Mendelssohn's 'Variations Serieuse' that I felt inspired to finally read the book. As Hepzibah was not as famous as her brother (yet no less talented and gifted), my wish was to glean as much about Hepzibah as I could. As she played such an integral part of Yehudi's life my thirst was sufficiently quenched, and in the process I learned about the humble, giving, intellectual, spiritual, eccentric and monumental musician and character that Yehudi Menuhin was.

I would highly recommend this book to all musicians both classically and jazz orientated as a highly informative and satisfactory read. If your choice is to live the life of a musician, or if serious music is a part of your life, then this book will contribute to the musical ethos that is a musician's and music-lover's lifelong study.

The only downside I experienced regarding this book was that I accidentally left it at the airport just before finishing the very last chapter. This has proved to be deeply frustrating; so now I must source a copy or alternatively I shall have to go out and buy another. The standard of the writing and research however, is of such a consistent and unwavering high caliber that I can comfortably recommend the book even though I haven't quite finished it. On second thought, I may as well purchase the book as it would certainly merit a future re-read; and it would not be amiss on one's bookshelf as a treasured and worthy possession.

Humphrey Burton's definitive biography of this outstanding musician begins with Yehudi's birth in New York to Russian Jewish immigrants. A prodigiously gifted youth, he gave his first solo recital at the age of eight and within the next five years because internationally acclaimed as a true prodigy of the violin. A visionary individualist quite capable of shocking traditionalists, Yehudi's postwar support for the conductor Wilhelm Furtwangler, and his determination to restore the defeated German nation to the cultural and political reputation that had been so devastated by the Nazi's and anti-semitism brought him into sharp conflict with the Jewish political establishment and displaced persons in Berlin. Still later he spoke out against apartheid in South Africa, Denounced the Soviet Union's oppressive policy toward writers and dissident; and actively support a number of idealistic cultural, social, political, and musical projects. Burton draws upon contemporary sources, unpublished family correspondence, and radio interviews for this richly textured biography, including Yehudi's stormy marriages. Yehudi Menuhin is "must" reading for his legions of fans and students of twentieth century classical music and musicians.

A superb, exhaustive piece of work

This book is a great service to music lovers. It corrects the errors and fills in the lacunae from Menuhin's own masterful "Unfinished Journey". For me, as the father of two musical daughters, it was helpful in providing greater perspective on what Menuhin's precocity looked up from his parents' point of view, and the decisions they made to allow its expression. Exhaustive note, and each chapter contains a list of recommended recordings, so one can follow along in the musical journey if one chooses.

About the Author
John T. Cacioppo is the Tiffany and Margaret Blake Distinguished Service Professor and Director of the Center for Cognitive and Social Neuroscience at the University of Chicago. He is a past President of several scientific societies, including the Association for Psychological Science, the Society for Social Neuroscience, the Society for Personality and Social Psychology, and the Society for Psychophysiological Research, and a past Chair of the Psychology Section of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Among the awards he has received are the Troland Award from the National Academy of Sciences, the Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award from the American Psychological Association, a MERIT Award from the National Institutes of Health, the Scientific Impact Award from the Society of Experimental Social Psychology, the Award for Distinguished Scientific Contributions from the Society for Psychophysiological Research, and the Campbell Award and the Theoretical Innovation Prize from the Society for Personality and Social Psychology. Cacioppo is a Member of the President's Committee on the National Medal of Science; the Chair of the Board of Behavioral, Cognitive, and Sensory Sciences at the National Research Council and a Member of the National Science Foundation Advisory Committee for the Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences Directorate; and a former Member of both the Council for the NIH Center for Scientific Review and the Council for the National Institute on Aging.

Laura A. Freberg (Ph.D., UCLA) is Professor of Psychology at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, where she teaches courses in Introductory Psychology, Biological Psychology, and Sensation and Perception. Laura's teaching career began when she taught her first college course at Pasadena City College at the age of 23. To better understand the needs of the online education community, she also teaches a variety of psychology courses for Argosy University Online. Laura has received Faculty Member of the Year recognition from Cal Poly Disabilities Resource Center three times (1991, 1994, and 2009) for her work with students with disabilities. She enjoys using technology and social media in the classroom, and is a Google Glass Explorer. Laura serves as the Content Expert Writer for Psychology for Answers.com and as the Bylaws and Archives Committee Chair for the Society for Social Neuroscience. She is a member of the editorial board for Leadership Quarterly. With John Cacioppo of the University of Chicago, she is the co-author of two editions of DISCOVERING PSYCHOLOGY: THE SCIENCE OF MIND (Cengage Learning).

In this powerful book, Aaron Huey (born 1975) portrays both the broken social landscape and the ceremonial warrior culture of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Never has there been a greater gap between rich and poor and it seems to be growing at an impossible and unsustainable rate (begging for a revolution). The system is rigged, and the ones with the power have made sure that they cannot lose. They do this through debt slavery, land grabs and governmental policies that place corporations above communities. I think often of the inequality that comes when the corporate state is in opposition to the health and welfare of the people. I think about it often in relationship to how our resources are extracted, and how that process negatively affects, in the short term, largely indigenous communities (but will ultimately affect us all). Though we need many of these resources to survive as a nation, the poisonous byproducts of these operations ― uranium mines, coal plants, fracking operations and tar-sand extractions, to name just a few – all seem to trickle down into the communities that have the least power. They pay for our wealth with their health, with the diseases they contract from the poisons they breath and drink. Many will pay with their death. (Helen Walters TED)

When Aaron Huey first visited South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Reservation in 2005, he didn’t expect that it would be a world-altering experience. He began the project as an objective photojournalist’s look at poverty in America. But after spending eight years documenting the residents of Pine Ridge, his professional and personal outlook has changed dramatically. His book, Mitakuye Oyasin, which was published by Radius Books in July, is perhaps just the tip of the iceberg of Huey’s work with the Lakota. “The whole book was almost more like a prayer or a poem than a documentary. It was like a ceremony, and I didn't realize it until the end. I didn't experience that place in a linear way and, at the end of the day, I didn't want to put it together in that way,” Huey said. “It's a big stack of images that a lot of people wish there was more explanation for and I didn't want to give it. A heartfelt book showing perseverance

Let me first say that there is another review of this book here whose reaction to the work comes of a deep place of resentment toward the world for the issues that the Lakota face, issues shown without apology in this book. Yet I don't truly believe that Aaron has deserved this critique and it reads as misinformed and a sweeping indictment of someone who should take no blame for the issues he has put forward.

Mitakuye Oyasin does not paint the issues that the Lakota on Pine Ridge face with any rose colored glasses. This itself is evidence enough that Aaron Huey cares deeply about the people there. To do anything else would be more of a disservice to the issues faced daily there. First, look to his efforts and campaigns to raise awareness and look for solutions to issues of poverty, land loss, heath issues, crime, and more, issues that in all honesty do plague the reservation. But beyond that Aaron does a masterful job of showing the interesting cross section of cultures that prevail.

Aaron Huey's work on Pine Ridge presents an interesting and captivating view of the cultural identity at Pine Ridge, one that persists despite the issues that face the people there, with a combination of old tradition and new. If you think about the deeper meaning in the images, there is a lot of history that persists despite persecution and the failings of the United States government to keep up their end of many bargains. The Hey�kȟa persist with many other traditions, many of which Aaron, through the trust he built in the community, has allowed us to see through this book. They persist along side the graffitied houses and tattooed youth riding horses and carrying guns. This is a book about perseverance and identity, not one of another "white man" taking advantage of the community. While difficult for some to see this world portrayed to the outside, I know that many more Lakota seem to support and thank Aaron for his work.

The visuals are superb. The printing is superb. The fact that we have the opportunity to see this work is yet another story of perseverance. It took a special photographer to attempt this project, a specialness duly recognized by photojournalism competitions this past year. From the perspective of another, albeit much less experienced photographer, I'm inspired to see that after years of hard work that Aaron finally got the acknowledgement he deserved and was able to share this piece in such a beautiful book.

A stunning work

I'm biased in this review- Aaron Huey is a friend of mine. But I became friends with Huey after encountering his photos. They were striking in a way that I had rarely seen before. As I learned more about his long years of work on the project, I was amazed by the level of dedication it takes to even come close to telling a story right. This book is the culmination of Aaron's long process of coming to understand Pine Ridge as a complex place caught in the ripple effects of a looming history. In that sense, this book is not simply 'pretty pictures of ugly things,' but rather, a visual exploration of those things in the context of the past, played out in the often mundane scenes of life on the reservation. At the end of the day, the work tells a story of an enduring spirit of Lakota pride undefeated in the shadow of history.

Great Book

I have followed Aaron huey, Kevin sites, and many other fantastic Journalist and explorers for along time. Most times there material are released free which is always a bless. However occasionally they will release a book which i am very very positive about like Kevin Site's book "In the Hot Zone", Mitakuye Oyasin shares Aaron's own point of view and beautiful photography. Overall its a great read and the man deserves at least a look before assuming he is using poverty, ect.. to get personal gain as some reviewers have posted.

This book is an astonishing reminiscence of a young Christian at the Shanghai Local Church under the Communist regime half century ago. Watchman Nee and his Local Church Movement have profoundly influenced the modern Chinese churches. Many Christians adore Nee’s preaching without knowing him as a person. A dense fog within the Local Church hinders historical transparency.

It is a story of serious introspection of a precious spiritual heritage. Her purpose is to offer positive inspiration and important lessons for the Church today and generations to come.

Lily M. Hsu MD was born in China and practiced medicine for decades. After coming to US in 1981 and completing clinical training, she practiced as a pediatric neurologist in Baton Rouge, LA in 1989-2006. Currently, she is retired and resides in the Dallas area.

In the Western World, there is no other Chinese Christian leader more famous, influential and well-known than Watchman Nee. He is also the founder of the “Local Church”, a controversial church group in China and worldwide. This is the first biography of Watchman Nee written by an insider and eye-witness of his trial in 1956. Just like the weakness and sinful actions of King David has been candidly recorded in I Samuel, this book might be viewed as Watchman Nee’s “prophetic biography.” If anyone wishes to know who Nee is and to evaluate his writings fairly, this is a must-read book.

There are several excellent biographies of Watchman Nee. This is definitely not one of them.

Lily Hsu's self-published biography of Watchman Nee attempts to cast a heavily critical light on the greatest of China's homegrown Christian leaders. The author came into contact with Nee's ministry when she was a young girl in the turbulent political climate of China's "War of Liberation" when the government's attitude toward Christians was increasingly oppressive. Now, a half a century later, she relates her experiences of witnessing the persecution and eventual termination of Nee's ministry in China by the communists while adding a heavy dose of her own spiritual analysis concerning the lessons we should all glean.
Because Watchman Nee's highly influential books The Spiritual Man and The Normal Christian Life speak for themselves the depth of Nee's spirituality, and because his testimony is that of one who spent 20 years in prison and was eventually martyred for his faith, I was, admittedly, quite skeptical about My Unforgettable Memories. Now, having read it, I feel my skepticism was well justified. The book has a number of problems, which I will detail below.

Editing

Unfortunately, one need not even open the book to see that its editing is poor; it apparently did not include a close inspection of the front and back covers. The subtitle reads "Watchman Nee & Shanghai Local Church" while the blurb on the back opens with: "This book is an astonishing reminiscence of a young Christian at the Shanghai Local Church under the Communist regime half century ago." The omission of articles continues, as it turns out, throughout the 377 page book where it becomes agonizingly clear that the editor(s) did little to mitigate the fact that English is not Lily Hsu's first language.
Amid writing that is choppy and, oftentimes, unpleasant to read, errors are plentiful and range from annoying (e.g. the inconsistent spelling of names and/or places) to almost humorous. At one point, early in the book, Hsu recounts: "Every Sunday, I went to Hardoon Rd with her and to the kids' Sunday school. I cannot remember what did they taught me, but I loved the small, pretty, and colorful cards with pictures and Bible verses." Elsewhere, her thoughts are almost incomprehensible: "Although I was most grateful to them, I knew it was better not to express out. My heart was on my grandmother who raised me since I was a toddler. I thought it was probably God's good idea for her passing away so that I could be freely going to jail." While the language, as a whole, is generally decipherable, the reader can expect to be constantly distracted by grammatical errors and malformed sentences.

The Author's Credibility

More importantly, Lily Hsu's credibility is questionable at best. Assuming, for a moment, that she is indeed able to recall, accurately and with painstaking detail, events that happened over 50 years ago, Hsu often claims to have insight into meetings or transactions between Nee and senior coworkers concerning which she, as a young college student, would never have been privy. Moreover she frequently attributes motives to Nee and others without justifying her conclusions.
However, the most severe blow to her credibility comes via her own admissions. At a critical moment in her account where Nee is `exposed' to her by communist interrogators (who have taken to strong-arming Christians everywhere into accusing one another before the government), Hsu blatantly admits that her accusations against Nee were not based on the Holy Spirits prompting, but on her essentially buying into the "People's Standpoint" while under psychological duress. This becomes all the more puzzling since Hsu admits, and even accounts in detail earlier in the book, how the communists were known to fabricate evidence against Christian leaders.

Spirituality

Finally, rather than just report the facts as the author remembers them, My Unforgettable Memories is full of Hsu's spiritual musings. On one hand, she goes to great lengths to describe the help she received from Watchman Nee's ministry and the blessings the Lord bestowed on the churches in China through his work, while simultaneously claiming special insight into Nee's failings as a Christian leader and the spiritual lessons that should be learned. Given this, the reader would be wise to consider which testimony is stronger: that of a woman who admits to being coerced by the communists into accusing a prevailing Christian teacher before a corrupt government, or that of a man who, having helped to establish hundreds of churches throughout China, went to jail for 20 years and was eventually martyred for his faith.

I would recommend that anyone who picks up My Unforgettable Memories approach this self-published biography with a heavy amount of skepticism. One will not even have to read between the lines to see that Hsu's allegations against Watchman Nee as well as her claims of special spiritual insight are equally dubious. However, given its embarrassing lack of editing, the reader would be better served to bypass this book entirely as there are several far more scholarly biographies of Watchman Nee available. I give it one star.

I know that people have given him a cult like following over the years at least in some cases ...

I find that referring to the Chinese government as liberating anything is suspect in my estimation. The term liberation was used enough times to make me wonder if she was just speaking on behalf of Red China. I know for a fact that Watchman Nee's books are banned in Red China. It would not surprise me that they would have someone undermine his ministry with this type of book.

Having said all of that, I am fully aware that no mortal human being is infallible and I think that putting Watchman Nee on that type of pedestal is a mistake so I agree with that position of the book. I know that people have given him a cult like following over the years at least in some cases and I see that as wrong.

Finally, I don't doubt Nee could have failed morally in some areas of his life. He was human and capable of such things like the rest of us. I just can't rule out that the book might be at least in part agenda driven.

Not well written - many repetitions. The author is not objective - she could not separate herself from her feelings that were hurt when Watchman Nee confessed of his crimes. It is very eye opening though. I wish everyone in so called "Lord's recovery" read it.
