This book is an astonishing reminiscence of a young Christian at the Shanghai Local Church under the Communist regime half century ago. Watchman Nee and his Local Church Movement have profoundly influenced the modern Chinese churches. Many Christians adore Nee’s preaching without knowing him as a person. A dense fog within the Local Church hinders historical transparency.

Lily M. Hsu MD was born in China and practiced medicine for decades. After coming to US in 1981 and completing clinical training, she practiced as a pediatric neurologist in Baton Rouge, LA in 1989-2006. Currently, she is retired and resides in the Dallas area.
In the Western World, there is no other Chinese Christian leader more famous, influential and well-known than Watchman Nee. He is also the founder of the “Local Church”, a controversial church group in China and worldwide. This is the first biography of Watchman Nee written by an insider and eye-witness of his trial in 1956. Just like the weakness and sinful actions of King David has been candidly recorded in I Samuel, this book might be viewed as Watchman Nee’s “prophetic biography.” If anyone wishes to know who Nee is and to evaluate his writings fairly, this is a must-read book.

There are several excellent biographies of Watchman Nee. This is definitely not one of them.

Lily Hsu's self-published biography of Watchman Nee attempts to cast a heavily critical light on the greatest of China's homegrown Christian leaders. The author came into contact with Nee's ministry when she was a young girl in the turbulent political climate of China's "War of Liberation" when the government's attitude toward Christians was increasingly oppressive. Now, a half a century later, she relates her experiences of witnessing the persecution and eventual termination of Nee's ministry in China by the communists while adding a heavy dose of her own spiritual analysis concerning the lessons we should all glean.
Because Watchman Nee's highly influential books The Spiritual Man and The Normal Christian Life speak for themselves the depth of Nee's spirituality, and because his testimony is that of one who spent 20 years in prison and was eventually martyred for his faith, I was, admittedly, quite skeptical about My Unforgettable Memories. Now, having read it, I feel my skepticism was well justified. The book has a number of problems, which I will detail below.
Editing
Unfortunately, one need not even open the book to see that its editing is poor; it apparently did not include a close inspection of the front and back covers. The subtitle reads "Watchman Nee & Shanghai Local Church" while the blurb on the back opens with: "This book is an astonishing reminiscence of a young Christian at the Shanghai Local Church under the Communist regime half century ago." The omission of articles continues, as it turns out, throughout the 377 page book where it becomes agonizingly clear that the editor(s) did little to mitigate the fact that English is not Lily Hsu's first language.
Amid writing that is choppy and, oftentimes, unpleasant to read, errors are plentiful and range from annoying (e.g. the inconsistent spelling of names and/or places) to almost humorous. At one point, early in the book, Hsu recounts: "Every Sunday, I went to Hardoon Rd with her and to the kids' Sunday school. I cannot remember what did they taught me, but I loved the small, pretty, and colorful cards with pictures and Bible verses." Elsewhere, her thoughts are almost incomprehensible: "Although I was most grateful to them, I knew it was better not to express out. My heart was on my grandmother who raised me since I was a toddler. I thought it was probably God's good idea for her passing away so that I could be freely going to jail." While the language, as a whole, is generally decipherable, the reader can expect to be constantly distracted by grammatical errors and malformed sentences.
The Author's Credibility
More importantly, Lily Hsu's credibility is questionable at best. Assuming, for a moment, that she is indeed able to recall, accurately and with painstaking detail, events that happened over 50 years ago, Hsu often claims to have insight into meetings or transactions between Nee and senior coworkers concerning which she, as a young college student, would never have been privy. Moreover she frequently attributes motives to Nee and others without justifying her conclusions.
However, the most severe blow to her credibility comes via her own admissions. At a critical moment in her account where Nee is `exposed' to her by communist interrogators (who have taken to strong-arming Christians everywhere into accusing one another before the government), Hsu blatantly admits that her accusations against Nee were not based on the Holy Spirits prompting, but on her essentially buying into the "People's Standpoint" while under psychological duress. This becomes all the more puzzling since Hsu admits, and even accounts in detail earlier in the book, how the communists were known to fabricate evidence against Christian leaders.
Spirituality
Finally, rather than just report the facts as the author remembers them, My Unforgettable Memories is full of Hsu's spiritual musings. On one hand, she goes to great lengths to describe the help she received from Watchman Nee's ministry and the blessings the Lord bestowed on the churches in China through his work, while simultaneously claiming special insight into Nee's failings as a Christian leader and the spiritual lessons that should be learned. Given this, the reader would be wise to consider which testimony is stronger: that of a woman who admits to being coerced by the communists into accusing a prevailing Christian teacher before a corrupt government, or that of a man who, having helped to establish hundreds of churches throughout China, went to jail for 20 years and was eventually martyred for his faith.
I would recommend that anyone who picks up My Unforgettable Memories approach this self-published biography with a heavy amount of skepticism. One will not even have to read between the lines to see that Hsu's allegations against Watchman Nee as well as her claims of special spiritual insight are equally dubious. However, given its embarrassing lack of editing, the reader would be better served to bypass this book entirely as there are several far more scholarly biographies of Watchman Nee available. I give it one star.

I find that referring to the Chinese government as liberating anything is suspect in my estimation. The term liberation was used enough times to make me wonder if she was just speaking on behalf of Red China. I know for a fact that Watchman Nee's books are banned in Red China. It would not surprise me that they would have someone undermine his ministry with this type of book.
Having said all of that, I am fully aware that no mortal human being is infallible and I think that putting Watchman Nee on that type of pedestal is a mistake so I agree with that position of the book. I know that people have given him a cult like following over the years at least in some cases and I see that as wrong.
Finally, I don't doubt Nee could have failed morally in some areas of his life. He was human and capable of such things like the rest of us. I just can't rule out that the book might be at least in part agenda driven.

Not well written - many repetitions. The author is not objective - she could not separate herself from her feelings that were hurt when Watchman Nee confessed of his crimes. It is very eye opening though. I wish everyone in so called "Lord's recovery" read it.
