The Signal and the Noise: Why So Many Predictions Fail - But Some Don't, by Nate Silver

"Nate Silver's The Signal and the Noise is The Soul of a New Machine for the 21st century." —Rachel Maddow, author of Drift

Nate Silver built an innovative system for predicting baseball performance, predicted the 2008 election within a hair’s breadth, and became a national sensation as a blogger—all by the time he was thirty. He solidified his standing as the nation's foremost political forecaster with his near perfect prediction of the 2012 election. Silver is the founder and editor in chief of FiveThirtyEight.com.

Drawing on his own groundbreaking work, Silver examines the world of prediction, investigating how we can distinguish a true signal from a universe of noisy data. Most predictions fail, often at great cost to society, because most of us have a poor understanding of probability and uncertainty. Both experts and laypeople mistake more confident predictions for more accurate ones. But overconfidence is often the reason for failure. If our appreciation of uncertainty improves, our predictions can get better too. This is the “prediction paradox”: The more humility we have about our ability to make predictions, the more successful we can be in planning for the future.

In keeping with his own aim to seek truth from data, Silver visits the most successful forecasters in a range of areas, from hurricanes to baseball, from the poker table to the stock market, from Capitol Hill to the NBA. He explains and evaluates how these forecasters think and what bonds they share. What lies behind their success? Are they good—or just lucky? What patterns have they unraveled? And are their forecasts really right? He explores unanticipated commonalities and exposes unexpected juxtapositions. And sometimes, it is not so much how good a prediction is in an absolute sense that matters but how good it is relative to the competition. In other cases, prediction is still a very rudimentary—and dangerous—science.

Silver observes that the most accurate forecasters tend to have a superior command of probability, and they tend to be both humble and hardworking. They distinguish the predictable from the unpredictable, and they notice a thousand little details that lead them closer to the truth. Because of their appreciation of probability, they can distinguish the signal from the noise.

With everything from the health of the global economy to our ability to fight terrorism dependent on the quality of our predictions, Nate Silver’s insights are an essential read.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best Books of the Month, September 2012: People love statistics. Statistics, however, do not always love them back. The Signal and the Noise, Nate Silver's brilliant and elegant tour of the modern science-slash-art of forecasting, shows what happens when Big Data meets human nature. Baseball, weather forecasting, earthquake prediction, economics, and polling: In all of these areas, Silver finds predictions gone bad thanks to biases, vested interests, and overconfidence. But he also shows where sophisticated forecasters have gotten it right (and occasionally been ignored to boot). In today's metrics-saturated world, Silver's book is a timely and readable reminder that statistics are only as good as the people who wield them. --Darryl Campbell

From Bookforum
Silver doesn't offer one comprehensive theory for what makes a good prediction in his interdisciplinary tour of forecasting. But the book is a useful gloss on the tricky business of making predictions correctly. —Chris Wilson

Review
One of Wall Street Journal's Best Ten Works of Nonfiction in 2012

“Mr. Silver, just 34, is an expert at finding signal in noise… Lively prose — from energetic to outraged… illustrates his dos and don’ts through a series of interesting essays that examine how predictions are made in fields including chess, baseball, weather forecasting, earthquake analysis and politics… [the] chapter on global warming is one of the most objective and honest analyses I’ve seen… even the noise makes for a good read.”
—New York Times

“Not so different in spirit from the way public intellectuals like John Kenneth Galbraith once shaped discussions of economic policy and public figures like Walter Cronkite helped sway opinion on the Vietnam War…could turn out to be one of the more momentous books of the decade.”
—New York Times Book Review

"A serious treatise about the craft of prediction—without academic mathematics—cheerily aimed at lay readers. Silver's coverage is polymathic, ranging from poker and earthquakes to climate change and terrorism."
—New York Review of Books

"Mr. Silver's breezy style makes even the most difficult statistical material accessible. What is more, his arguments and examples are painstakingly researched..."
—Wall Street Journal

"Nate Silver is the Kurt Cobain of statistics... His ambitious new book, The Signal and the Noise, is a practical handbook and a philosophical manifesto in one, following the theme of prediction through a series of case studies ranging from hurricane tracking to professional poker to counterterrorism. It will be a supremely valuable resource for anyone who wants to make good guesses about the future, or who wants to assess the guesses made by others. In other words, everyone."
—The Boston Globe

"Silver delivers an improbably breezy read on what is essentially a primer on making predictions."
—Washington Post

“The Signal and the Noise is many things — an introduction to the Bayesian theory of probability, a meditation on luck and character, a commentary on poker's insights into life — but it's most important function is its most basic and absolutely necessary one right now: a guide to detecting and avoiding bullshit dressed up as data…What is most refreshing… is its humility. Sometimes we have to deal with not knowing, and we need somebody to tell us that.”
—Esquire

“[An] entertaining popularization of a subject that scares many people off… Silver’s journey from consulting to baseball analytics to professional poker to political prognosticating is very much that of a restless and curious mind. And this, more than number-crunching, is where real forecasting prowess comes from.”
—Slate

“Nate Silver serves as a sort of Zen master to American election-watchers… In the spirit of Nassim Nicholas Taleb’s widely read “The Black Swan”, Mr. Silver asserts that humans are overconfident in their predictive abilities, that they struggle to think in probabilistic terms and build models that do not allow for uncertainty.”
—The Economist

"Silver explores our attempts at forecasting stocks, storms, sports, and anything else not set in stone."
—Wired

"The Signal and the Noise is essential reading in the era of Big Data that touches every business, every sports event, and every policymaker."
—Forbes.com

“Laser sharp. Surprisingly, statistics in Silver’s hands is not without some fun.”
—Smithsonian Magazine

“A substantial, wide-ranging, and potentially important gauntlet of probabilistic thinking based on actual data thrown at the feet of a culture determined to sweep away silly liberal notions like ‘facts.’”
—The Village Voice

“Silver shines a light on 600 years of human intelligence-gathering—from the advent of the printing press all the way through the Industrial Revolution and up to the current day—and he finds that it's been an inspiring climb. We've learned so much, and we still have so much left to learn.”
—MLB.com

“Nate Silver’s The Signal and the Noise is The Soul of a New Machine for the 21st century (a century we thought we’d be a lot better at predicting than we actually are). Our political discourse is already better informed and more data-driven because of Nate’s influence. But here he shows us what he has always been able to see in the numbers—the heart and the ethical imperative of getting the quantitative questions right.  A wonderful read—totally engrossing.”
—Rachel Maddow, author of Drift

“Yogi Berra was right: ‘forecasting is hard, especially about the future.’ In this important book, Nate Silver explains why the performance of experts varies from prescient to useless and why we must plan for the unexpected. Must reading for anyone who cares about what might happen next.”
—Richard Thaler, co-author of Nudge

“Making predictions in the era of ‘big data’ is not what you might imagine. Nate Silver's refreshing and original book provides unpredictably illuminating insights differentiating objective and subjective realities in forecasting our future. He reminds us that the human element is still essential in predicting advances in science, technology and even politics... if we were only wise enough to learn from our mistakes.”
—Governor Jon Huntsman

“Here's a prediction: after you read The Signal and the Noise, you'll have much more insight into why some models work well—and also why many don't.  You'll learn to pay more attention to weather forecasts for the coming week—and none at all for weather forecasts beyond that.  Nate Silver takes a complex, difficult subject and makes it fun, interesting, and relevant.”
—Peter Orszag, former director of the Office of Management and Budget

“Projection, prediction, assumption, trepidation, anticipation, expectation, estimation… we wouldn’t have 80 words like this in the English language if it wasn’t central to our lives. We tend not to take prediction seriously because, on some level, we know that we don’t know. Silver shows us how this inevitable part of life goes awry when projected on a grand scale into the murky worlds of politics, science and economics. Dancing through chess, sports, snowstorms, global warming and the McLaughlin Group, he makes a serious and systematic effort to show us how to clean the noise off the signal.”
—Bill James, author of The Bill James Baseball Abstracts

Much-needed insight to understand and improve predictive science
By Sitting in Seattle
This is the best general-readership book on applied statistics that I've read. Short review: if you're interested in science, economics, or prediction: read it. It's full of interesting cases, builds intuition, and is a readable example of Bayesian thinking.

Longer review: I'm an applied business researcher and that means my job is to deliver quality forecasts: to make them, persuade people of them, and live by the results they bring. Silver's new book offers a wealth of insight for many different audiences. It will help you to develop intuition for the kinds of predictions that are possible, that are not so possible, where they may go wrong, and how to avoid some common pitfalls.

The core concept is this: prediction is a vital part of science, of business, of politics, of pretty much everything we do. But we're not very good at it, and fall prey to cognitive biases and other systemic problems such as information overload that make things worse. However, we are simultaneously learning more about how such things occur and that knowledge can be used to make predictions better -- and to improve our models in science, politics, business, medicine, and so many other areas.

The book presents real-world experience and critical reflection on what happens to research in social contexts. Data-driven models with inadequate theory can lead to terrible inferences. For example, on p. 162: "What happens in systems with noisy data and underdeveloped theory - like earthquake prediction and parts of economic and political science - is a two-step process. First, people start to mistake the noise for a signal. Second, this noise pollutes journals, blogs, and news accounts with false alarms, undermining good science and setting back our ability to understand how the system really works." This is the kind of insight that every good practitioner acquires through hard-won battles, and continues to wrestle every day both in doing work and in communicating it to others.

It is both readable and technically accurate: it presents just enough model details yet avoids being formula-heavy. Statisticians will be able to reproduce models similar to the ones he discusses, but general readers will not be left out: the material is clear and applicable. Scholars of all stripes will appreciate the copious notes and citations, 56 pages of notes and another 20 pages of index, which detail the many sources. It is also important to note that this is perhaps the best general readership book from a Bayesian perspective -- a viewpoint that is overdue for readable exposition.

The models cover a diversity of areas from baseball to politics, from earthquakes to finance, from climate science to chess. Of course this makes the book fascinating to generalists, geeks, and breadth thinkers, but perhaps more importantly, I think it serves well to develop reusable intuition across domains. And, for those of us who practice such things professionally, to bring stories and examples that we can tell and use to illustrate concepts with the people we inform.

There are three audiences who might not appreciate the book as much. First are students looking for a how-to book. Silver provides a lot of pointers and examples, but does not get into nuts and bolts details or supply foundational technical instruction. That requires coursework in research methods and and statistics. Second, his approach to doing multiple models and interpreting them humbly will not satisfy those who promote a naive, gee-whiz, "look how great these new methods are" approach to research. But then, that's not a problem; it's a good thing. The third non-fitting audience will be experts who desire depth in one of the book's many topic areas; it's not a technical treatise for them and I can confidently predict grumbling in some quarters. Overall, those three audiences are small, which happily leaves the rest of us to enjoy the book.

What would make it better? As a pro, I'd like a little more depth (of course). It emphasizes games a little too much for my taste. And a clearer prescriptive framework could be nice (but also could be a problem for reasons he illustrates). But those are minor points; it hits its target better than any other such book I know.

Conclusion: if you're interested in scientific or statistical forecasting, either as a professional or layperson, or if you simply enjoy general science books, get it. Cheers!

Great book, and here are some takeaways
By Kindle Customer
Excellent book!!! People looking for a "how to predict" silver bullet will (like some reviewers here) be disappointed, mainly because Silver is too honest to pretend that such a thing exists. The anecdotes and exposition are fantastic, and I wish we could make this book required reading for, say, everyone in the country.

During election season, everyone with a newspaper column or TV show feels entitled to make (transparently partisan) predictions about the consequences of each candidate's election to unemployment/crime/abortion/etc. This kind of pundit chatter, as Silver notes, tends to be insanely inaccurate. But there are also some amazing success stories in the prediction business. I list some chapter-by-chapter takeaways below (though there's obviously a lot depth more to the book than I can fit into a list like this):

1. People have puzzled over prediction and uncertainty for centuries.

2. TV pundits make terrible predictions, no better than random guesses. They are rewarded for being entertaining, and not really penalized for being wrong.

3. Statistics has revolutionized baseball. But computer geeks have not replaced talent scouts altogether. They're working together in more interesting ways now.

4. Weather prediction has gotten lots better over the last fifty years, due to highly sophisticated, large-scale supercomputer modeling.

5. We have almost no ability to predict earthquakes. But we know that some regions are more earthquake prone, and that in a given region an earthquake of magnitude n happens about ten times as often as an earthquake of magnitude (n+1).

6. Economists are terrible at predicting quantities such as next year's GDP. Predictions are only very slightly correlated with reality. They also tend to be overconfident, drastically underestimating the margin of error in their guesses. Politically motivated predictions (such as those released by White House, historically) are even worse.

7. The spread of a disease like the flu is hard to predict. Sometimes we overreact because risk of under-reacting seems greater.

8. A few professional sports gamblers are able to make make a living by spotting meaningful patterns before others do, and being right slightly more than half the time.

9. Kasparov thought he could beat Deep Blue. Couldn't. Interesting tale of humans/computers trying to outguess each other.

10. Nate Silver made a living playing online poker for a few years. When the government tightened the rules, the less savvy players ("fish") stopped playing, and he found he couldn't make money any more. So he started FiveThirtyEight.

11. Efficient market hypothesis: market seems very efficient, but not perfectly so. Possible source of error: most investment is done by institutions, and individuals at these institutions are rewarded based on short term profits. Rational employees may have less career risk when they "bet with the consensus" than when they buck a trend: this may increase herding effects and makes bubbles worse. Note: Nate pointedly does not claim that one can make money on Intrade by betting based on FiveThirtyEight probabilities. But he stresses that Intrade prices are themselves probably heavily informed by poll-based models like the ones on FiveThirtyEight.

12. Climate prediction: prima facie case for anthropic warming is very strong (greenhouse gas up, temperature up, good theoretical reason for former causing latter). But lots of good reason to doubt accuracy of specific elaborate computer models, and most scientists admit uncertainty about details.

13. We failed to predict both Pearl Harbor and September 11. Unknown unknowns got us. Got to watch out for loose Pakistani nukes and other potential catastrophic surprises in the future.

I liked this book, but, then again, I am a geek.
By RonnieT
Nate Silver is best known for using polling data to call political elections. He missed on the Trump win, but was pretty good up until then.

The Signal and the Noise is a well written, well researched and well reasoned book about forecasting and the various mistakes that prognosticators make. He addresses failures as the inability of economists and others to foresee the bursting of the housing bubble and the chaos it created in 2008. Other themes include easier-to-predict subjects such as future performance of major league baseball players and the success (or not) of poker players. In these later two, he has real world experience as he developed software to predict baseball player performance and made a living as a professional poker player.

Other forecasting areas that he writes about include weather (a modern success); earthquakes (not so much due to difficulties in differentiating the signal from the noise); the spread of infectious diseases (difficult to model due to human behaviour); and climate change (right on warming but uncertain about effects).

One of the over all themes involves the Bayes Theorem. This requires an a priori hunch about the chances of an event that is refined by future observations and experimenting.

There were sections I like more than others, but this may correlate more with my affinity for the subjects rather than Silver's reporting. I particularly like the section on Climate Change research. It was thoughtful and open-minded. As he does throughout the book, he looks at the facts and the stats and interviews the people involved in the research.

From Booklist
How to best combine two passions--in this case, gardening and stained glass? In their fifth book, Shannon and Torlen team to produce 28 different projects, all worthy of emulation. Breezing through the fundamentals squeezed into, unfortunately, too few pages, Shannon and Torlen feature elegant nature-inspired designs in two waves: one for lead came, the other for copper foil. Regardless of the technique, each project includes dimensions, number of pieces, glass required, other materials and tools, step-by-step instructions, a ready-to-enlarge template, and notes and tips (for instance, never leave a burning candle unattended). Applications are varied, such as window and garden panels, jiggle stakes, lanterns, mobiles, bird feeders, torchieres, garden sprinklers, even a Zen garden. And nature is well represented, from a bee and butterflies to snowy egrets and spiderwebs. Too bad the layout is cramped and the photographs way too small. Barbara Jacobs

What I was looking for
By Amazon Customer
I am a novice in stained glass...I know the fundamentals of cutting, soldering, finishing, etc.. What this book provides is some really cool extensions and applications of the basic skills. There are awesome designs that will be great in any garden either as a gift or, if you are an artist looking to produce pieces, works that will sell themselves.

Beautiful book but instructions need to be better....
By K. Morris
Book is beautiful and the ideas in it are some of the best. This has become our go to book for project ideas but the instructions leave A LOT TO BE DESIRED... Struggling with the pelican and the tulip cups because the instructions are so vague. I am fairly new at this but I am working with 2 people that have been doing this for 20 and 30 years and they cant make sense out of some of the instructions either.

I wish there was some place to get more instruction on the patterns.

Cool projects
By K. Wine
I have been working with stained glass for awhile now,and I am always looking for new ideas.I could not afford the classes and materials,so I got hired on in a glass shop. Now,I make things all the time, for other people. This book gave me some some great ideas of things to make for the garden.Flowers don't last forever, but glass looks beautiful and lasts for a long time.I love the sprinklers,I think they are lovely!

Interesting read..
By pamela j.
Mind control is not something that we see in the movies, it has been prowed as very powerful thing. This book ia about controlling your mind in order to get things that you want and to live your life to the fullest.
There are different types of mind control as we see it today. The most common is advertising and the way media convince the public that they have just what the public needs at the moment. Each ad is created to convince potential buyer they are targeting to buy their products. The person who does control mind is trying to get you to think the way he is. In order to convince someone to do something the person has to follow certain rules, has to learn how to be deceptive. There are techniques described, like eye contact, voice, body language, motivation..
Interesting read!

By Riley Jones
It is well-written, well-researched, interesting, and informative. Read only if you have a strong stomach for this kind of thing. Mind control is a scary thing for me. The author does not insist on his point of view, but compares and contrasts available information and leaves the room for the readers to come up with their own conclusions. This is a must-read book for anyone interested in the history of mind control.

Ho Chi Minh: The Missing Years 1919 - 1941, by Sophie Quinn-Judge

This book explores Ho's pre-power political career, from his emergence at the Paris Peace Conference in 1919 to his organization of the Viet Minh united front at the start of the Second World War. Using previously untapped sources from Comintern and French intelligence archives, Sophie Quinn-Judge examines Ho's life in the light of two interconnecting themes--the origins and institutional development of the Indochinese Communist Party, and the impact on early Vietnamese communism of political developments in China and the Soviet Union.

An essential addition to Duiker and Marr.
By S. Darragh
Ho Chi Minh remains an enigmatic figure, in no small part because he planned it that way. Duiker's "(HCM)...A Life", Marr's "Vietnam 1945", and Bartholomew-Feis' "The OSS and Ho Chi Minh" have all stripped away some of the mystery, but blank spaces remain. Mrs. Quinn-Judge steps into the fray to drop some countervailing facts that challenge some of those author's judgments. One is left wondering if Ho Chi Minh was really a Communist Internationalist, or a Vietnamese Nationalist, or a man for all seasons, capable of telling everyone exactly what they wanted to hear. Her points are well made. Highly recommended for those interested enough to form their own judgments.

Brilliant archive work with an overdose of detail
By Joe6Pack
Impressive archive work with lots of original discoveries, which help to discern fact (to extent accessible and verifiable) from myths and fiction provided by Communist propaganda and his enemies alike. We witness a young emigre in Paris who in vain tried to interest the CPF in colonial issues of far away Indochina, his travails in Moscow where he thanks to his low profile and non-ideological stands survived Stalin's purges of the Trotskytes and foreign "agents", a year of monastic travels in Siam (where he was mostly sick with tuberculosis) and finally his labours in revolutionary China, surviving on revolutionary teaching and translation work for the Comintern. Most of the time he was treated as lowly revolutionary clerk, producing papers which nobody wanted to publish, and to beg for money from his masters in Moscow, who had other priorities (including their own survival) than helping in the preparation for revolution by a minuscule group of quarreling exiles in a far away peripheral country without apperantly any strategic importance. The only people interested in him were the agents of the Surete, who were after his head. He narrowly escaped thanks to the uncooperative sloppiness of the British authorities in HK. The archive work done in Moscow and France and the linguistic skills needed which went into this book are truely impressive. Yet there is an overdose of detail, the understandable wish to tell ALL, with dozens of unexplained Vietnamese names on each page (although there is in fairness a sketchy biographical annex for the most important ones). But does one really needs to know who was with whom in which short-term training course in Moscow or in Southern China in the 1930s? This goes on for pages....

No Limits: The Will to Succeed, by Michael Phelps, Alan Abrahamson

"When I'm focused, there is not one single thing, person, anything that can stand in the way of my doing something. There is not. If I want something bad enough, I feel I'm gonna get there."

Michael Phelps is one of the greatest competitors the world has ever seen. From teen sensation in Sydney to bona fide phenom in Athens, he is now -- after the Beijing Games -- a living Olympic legend. With an unprecedented eight gold medals and world-record times in seven events, his performance at the 2008 Games set a new standard for success. He ranks among the most elite athletes in the world, and is both an inspiration and a role model to millions. The incredible focus he exhibits in practice and during competition propels him forward to his unrivaled excellence. In No Limits, Michael Phelps reveals the secrets to his remarkable success, from his training regimen to his mental preparation and, finally, to his performance in the pool.

Behind Phelps's tally of Olympic gold medals lies a consistent approach to competition, a determination to win, and a straightforward passion for his sport. Like Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods, he has learned to filter out distractions and deliver stellar performance under pressure. The road has not always been easy; from the very beginning, Phelps had to overcome physical setbacks and emotional trials. When he was younger, he was diagnosed with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder; other kids bullied him; even a teacher said he would never be successful. Later, he had to work through injuries that jeopardized his career. In this book, Phelps talks for the first time about how he has overcome these and other challenges - about how to develop the mental attitude needed to persevere, not just in athletic competition but in life.

His success is imbued with the perspective of overcoming the obstacles that come your way and believing in yourself no matter the odds.

No Limits explores the hard work, commitment, and sacrifice that go into reaching any goal. Whether it is on the starting block during an Olympic swim meet or in the weight room on a typical day, Phelps's dedication has led him to unparalleled excellence. Filled with anecdotes from family members, friends, teammates, and his coach, No Limits gives a behind-the-scenes look at the makings of a real champion. One of Phelps's mottos is "Performance Is Reality," and it typifies his attitude toward achieving his goals. It's easy to get bogged down by doubt or to lose focus when a challenge seems out of reach, but Phelps believes that you can accomplish anything if you fully commit yourself to it. Using the eight final swims of the Beijing Olympics as a model, No Limits is a step-by-step guide to realizing one's dream.

From AudioFile
Michael Phelps, who won eight gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, talks about his swimming career, his preparation, and his dream of bringing the sport to greater prominence in the United States. Introduced by Phelps himself, the book is read by Holter Graham with a voice that matches the tone of Phelps's writing: a touch of cockiness offset by hard work and dedication to his sport. Listeners whose interest in Phelps has been piqued by recent news won't find much scandal here, although Phelps discusses his DUI arrest and tackles the issue of doping. The emphasis on training and preparation, however, will be of special interest to athletes. J.A.S. © AudioFile 2009, Portland, Maine

A Nice and Quick Motivational Book
By Brooklyn Joe
This book was a nice and quick read. It is simply a motivational book by the worlds greatest swimmer: Michael Phelps. I was expecting more of a biography. Instead, the author takes us race by race throughout the entire 2008 Beijing Olympics, for a total of eight races/chapters. In each chapter it digresses to different parts of Phelps' life. In addition, each chapter has a different title geared towards achieving your goals.

Many times this book felt repetitive. It simply reinstates the same messages about setting goals, focusing and working hard to achieve them. Plus, I really didn't understand how many of the chapter titles stress that point in each chapter. It really felt like one repetitive message throughout the book. I also got lost many times throughout the technical points of swimming. You really need to be a hardcore fan to keep up with the different swim strokes, races, times, etc. (I guess Phelps underestimates the audience as most of us are not as familiar with swimming as he would like us to be).

The good part of the book is that it is not dragged out. Despite the points above, it is a brief and quick read. It is very manageable to quickly read through this book and get its overall message very clearly. I am one who loves motivation and inspiration, especially when it is given by someone that is very accomplished in his/her field. Therefore, if you want a quick reinforcing motivational tool, this book is for you. You can probably finish it in a few days or a week at most. Plus you'll get a glimpse at the life of probably the greatest swimmer in history.

REACH FOR IT MICHAEL IT'S YOURS !
By May Bee
This book like every one I have ever read about Michael Phelps is so inspirational. His life wasn't "a piece of cake". He made it what it is. I cannot imagine ever knowing of another athlete who observed a schedule like his from childhood. And in fact perhaps lost some of his childhood because of his goals. This to me is a really great person who deserves to reach the extreme highest honors.

From Library Journal
This laudatory biography creates an interesting counterpoint to Jung's own autobiography ( Memories, Dreams, Reflections, 1963) by placing the inner man of the autobiography in social and historical context. Relying on Jung's quotations, letters, and stories, as well as on his friends and other biographers, Wehr gives us a complex portrait of the man who founded analytical psychology. Even those unfamiliar Jung's work will find the book satisfying and will probably want to read more by and about him. The book appears well documented, though footnotes were not seen. AN EXCELLENT AND DETAILED (AND SYMPATHETIC) BIOGRAPHY OF THE PSYCHOLOGIST
By Steven H Propp
Gerhard Wehr is a German writer who has written other books such as Jung and Steiner, The Mystical Marriage: Symbol and Meaning of the Human Experience, and many others which have not been translated. In an early chapter of this 1985 book he wrote , "these early [recollections] may be taken quite literally as 'internal experiences,' even when they refer to things heard and seen externally. This is unquestionably the major difficulty in writing a biography of Jung. This inward-directedness was later termed 'introversion,' or 'turning within,' in the context of his studies of psychological types. In his old age the only events of his life that seemed worth reporting were those in which the 'imperishable world irrupted into the transitory one,' thereby presenting him with the raw material... for his life's work." (Pg. 22-23)

He discusses Jung's attitude to his father (who was a Reformed minister): "The son thought his father had never experienced the miracle of grace. He had taken the Commandments of the Bible as his guide and more or less blindly believed in its contents, as the tradition of his fathers demanded... In this crisis Carl sought to help his father---the minister's son helping the minister! Vainly he tried to share something of his own experiences, particularly later when he reached eighteen and had many discussions with his father. Resignedly he had to report: 'Our discussions invariably came to an unsatisfactory end.'" (Pg. 48)

Wehr records Jung's enthusiastic early participation in sances (Pg. 70-74). He also relates Jung's numerous extramarital affairs [including with Sabina Spielrein, a patient of his] (Pg. 141-143). He says about the "three-way relationship" Jung insisted upon between his wife, Jungian analyst Toni Wolff, himself: "It would hardly be possible to achieve a proper evaluation of this fateful constellation from outside. Many people, though, might have found the problems of this three-way relationship unacceptable, making it all the more astonishing that a modus viviendi was in fact found and practiced which lasted for decades... Barbara Hannah... wrote, 'What saved the situation was that there was no "lack of love" in any of the three. Jung was able to give both his wife and Toni a most satisfactory amount, and BOTH women REALLY loved him.'" (Pg. 189)

He says of the final break between Jung and Freud [Freud had called Jung his "crown prince"; pg. 111]: "Jung's criticism that the techniques with which Freud treated patients and students alike constituted an interference... he was begetting 'slavish sons' for himself... Publicly, of course, Jung would continue to support Freud, but with due recognition of his own views. With this Freud felt it impossible to continue their private relationship. Indeed he would lost nothing by it, he said, for... the earlier disappointments he had suffered were always before him... Jung's letter of 6 January 1913... is of a brevity that speaks for itself: '...I shall submit to your wish to discontinue our personal relationship, for I never force my friendship on anyone.'" (Pg. 152-153)

He speaks obliquely about Jung's near-breakdown: "The old admonition 'Physician, heal thyself' is nowhere more warranted than here... Gradually a change began to be apparent. It turned out that the measures Jung had found by instinct and intuition had been the right ones for his spiritual and psychic predicament. They had helped him... to maintain his contact with everyday reality and his obligations to society." (Pg. 191) He wrote of Jung's development of Psychological Types (Pg. 206-210), as well as his fascination with the I Ching (pg. 234-235) and his later preoccupation with Alchemy (pg. 256-258).

Of Jung's controversial relationship with the Nazi Party, Hitler, and anti-Semitism, he admits, "it must be said that Jung did after all allow himself to be carried away into statements which, if taken at face value, could and indeed were bound to be interpreted as serious discrimination... time and circumstance, indeed even his choice of words, were bound to leave open the door to misunderstanding..." (Pg. 317-319) Later, Jung admitted to rabbi Leo Baeck, "'Yes, I slipped up,' when it came to his position on the Nazis and his expectation that perhaps this might have been the start of something great." (Pg. 325)

When Jung was interviewed in 1959 for a television program, he was asked whether he believed in God: "Then he admitted that it was really a quite difficult question. And to the surprise of his listeners he added quite definitely: 'I KNOW. I don't need to believe. I know.'" (Pg. 440)

This book is one of the best biographies of Jung [along with Carl Gustav Jung: A Biography and Jung: A Biography], and will be of great interest to anyone seriously studying the life of this towering and still-influential figure.

BORING!
By Ms Keith
I did learn something about Jung by reading this biography: He's a man and he really knew how to promote himself. In other words, why would we follow this man's teachings? He consulted spirits and believed in necromancy. Don't tell me what the man promoted; tell me how he lived. His life reveals his motivation. This man does not have the answer. The spirits he consulted do not have the answers. Knocking, popping furniture can be explained, and if this is what this guy believed in, no thank you. The human soul driven by selfishness and fear is the real problem. Surrender to our Creator God is the beginning of the solution. The Bible is the source for dealing with common problems. Confession, repentance, and forgiveness are the big three for dealing with psychological problems. But since these are Biblically-based and not Jung or Freudian-based most people don't want to face their selfish pride. I guess we all want it to be something else. I'm glad I attempted to read this book. It explained way more to me than reading his teachings ever could explain.
