superb overview of the Permian extinction event

Michael J. Benton's text, When Life Nearly Died, is superb. The topic of the book is the end-Permian extinction, an event less known to the average reader but of far greater impact than that of the KT boundary extinction of the dinosaurs. Although not necessarily as emotively compelling or as dramatic as the latter, the Permian devastation left the planet with only 4-10% of its previous species. It was a bottleneck of major consequence for subsequent biodiversity.

I would recommend this volume to any general reader with an interest in paleontology and earth history. The book covers the early history of geology and especially the biographies and activities of those researchers who helped define the rock sequences which every student memorizes: Precambrian, Cambrian, Ordovician, Silurian, Devonian, Carboniferous, Permian, Triassic, Jurassic, Cretaceous, and Tertiary. He focuses particularly on those who clarified the facies of the Permian and Triassic and brought to light the fact that "something funny" was going on then.

Although no real background in geology is needed to comprehend the narrative, I suspect that most will find the first chapters more interesting than later ones. The author touches upon subjects like uniformitarianism and catastrophism and the disagreement between them and upon the scientific free-for-all that arises over new theories like the impact demise of the dinosaurs, making them quite clear for the average reader. He subsequently builds upon the basics he has provided to carry one through his thesis. Once he gets into the actual discussion about the causes of the Permian event, however, the discussion settles down to chemistry, especially atmospheric and oceanic chemistry: how they work, how they interact, and how they can go horribly wrong. This may be a little tougher going for some readers. For those expecting a definitive answer to what caused the extinction, they will be disappointed. While there are contenders aplenty, the author honestly admits that there is not yet a clear winner and the ultimate cause may be multifacited.

I was especially impressed by the author's ability to stay on track. He gave a good background discussion, added some information about his own contributions, discussed the theories currently entertained by the geological community and ended with a discussion about biodiversity and human impact on the environment. In short the book was about the Permian extinction with enough support material to help a non-professional reader understand it and was not a platform for an autobiographical ego trip. He also gave a very clear and unbiased account of other scientists' work and how their efforts fit into the whole picture. In short he gave credit where credit was due.

A great long overdue book on the Permian mass extinction

Distinguished vertebrate paleontologist Michael J. Benton's latest book, "When Life Nearly Died: The Greatest Mass Extinction Of All Time", is a long overdue popular account of the worst mass extinction in Earth's history, the end Permian extinction of approximately 251 million years ago. Other customers have complained that this book only devotes less than a quarter of its text to the Permian extinction. However, Benton does an elegant job describing the rise of a uniformitarian view of geology in the 19th Century (One major omission is not citing Scottish geologist James Hutton, who can be regarded correctly as Charles Lyell's intellectual precursor with respect to uniformitarianism.) which was eloquent expressed and defended by Charles Lyell in "Principles of Geology", his influential text on geology which helped shaped the careers of other distinguished scientists, most notably Charles Darwin. Next Benton gives a mesmerizing account of the career of Scottish geologist Roderick Murchison, who coined the name Permian for a suite of rocks found in the Ural Mountains of Russia. These lengthy digressions are important - and will become apparent to the astute reader - once Benton describes the Permian mass extinction.
The second third of the book discusses the nature of mass extinctions, describing why paleontologists were inclined originally to think of mass extinctions as the result of apparent bias in sampling of the fossil record, not as real events denoting substantial loss of the Earth's biodiversity. Benton devotes much space to discussing possible scenarios for the end Cretaceous mass extinction, noting that that the asteroid impact theory proposed by Luis Alvarez, his son Walter, and their colleagues at Berkeley is the one accepted now by scientists. And he notes how ecosystems recover following a mass extinction, noting some of the important work done by ecologists and paleontologists in their analyses of recent ecological data as well as the fossil record.
In the final chapters Benton describes what he thinks did happen at the end Permian mass extinction, offering a plausible scenario for this event (However, he dismisses a probable impact scenario which may be more likely in light of current understanding of planetary impacts, most notably the work done by the Alvarez team and others for the terminal Cretaceous impact.). And he gives a thorough overview of man's negative impact on current biodiversity, noting that this could be yet another important extinction in Earth's history. Students of paleontology, historians of science and the general public will find this fine book a splendid overview of mass extinctions, especially the Permian extinction. It is one of the best recent books on the history of geology and paleontology that I have come across lately.

A superb review of the science of extinction of species

Dr. Michael Benton, an eminent vertebrate paleontologist, has authored many books on the subject. This is one of his finest.
In this book, Dr. Benton addresses the multiple quandaries underlying mass extinctions, and ever-continuing, sometimes controversial, even acrimonious, effort to solve them. As per his high standards, Dr. Benton's text is highly readable, even though complex problems are being analyzed. He introduces the reader to alien or new concepts capably, and the text forms a seamless web along which any reader having a limited exposure to scientific disciplines may proceed without strenuous effort.
NOTE: Although the book's title appears to indicate a rather exclusive discussion about the largest mass extinction, the Permian-Triassic event, which ended the Paleozoic Era and ushered in the Mesozoic, the actual scope of the book is more broad. This is a pleasant, and very helpful, surprise.
Dr. Benton begins with the discovery of dinosaurs, and the history of the mapping of Europe's stratigraphy, before moving into the area of mass extinctions. Without this preliminary discussion, it would be far more difficult to understand how the concept and science of these events developed. I view this as a positive aspect of the book, since the concept of catastrophic events affecting the course of life's progress was most difficult for pioneers in the field to accept. The text admirably demonstrates that science is, after all, a human endeavor, complete with feuds, rivalries, and disputes. Indeed, much scientific progress has been achieved via disagreements and attempt to disprove the opponent's theories. I recommend this discussion to the students of ANY scientific discipline, not just paleontology.
The book moves to an examination of the five largest mass extinction events, with special emphasis being placed on the Mesozoic-ending extinction of the dinosaurs and the Permian-Triassic event. Smaller events are also addressed, such as the loss of species at the end of the Eocene epoch in our era. Dr.
Benton observes that the very large extinction episode at the end of the Cretaceous Period is almost universally accepted to have been the result of a colossal asteroid collision. He very properly notes that as one moves backward in time, the problem of causation of extictions becomes much more difficult to solve owing to plate movements, erosion and sedimentation, and diminution of appropriate outcrops of rocks.
Addressing the book's titled subject, Dr. Benton reviews the various claims that have been advanced for the cause of this "Mother of Extinctions". These include another huge collision with an extraterrestrial body, great climate change, enormous volcanic eruptions in what is now Siberia, a gigantic release of methyl hydrate gases in the oceans, a large drop in oceanic water levels, the uniting of all land masses into a single continent, the explosion of a nearby supernova, and on and on. Though he is taken to task by some reviewers, Dr. Benton reaches no categorical conclusion as to which of these events, singly or in combintion, offers the best explanation of the wiping out of over 90% of Earth's species of life. His best guess, phrased largely as such, is that the removal of so many lifeforms was a combination of large volcanic eruptions, only one land mass, and the freeing of enormous amount of carbon dioxide into Earth's atmosphere by the breakdown of methane hydrates in the oceans of that time.
NOTE: This writer disagrees, preferring the theory that an enormous impact event in the Falkland Island Basin caused antipodal supervolcnic Siberian lava flows, and that the combination of these two events almost destroyed the Earth's atmosphere, and its life. But am I right, or is the far more qualified Dr. Benton right? Or are we both wrong? The answer awaits further data and analysis of it. And coming full circle, this how the body of scientific knowledge grows.
In closing, this is one of the very best books I have ever read on science and its processes of growth. I recommend this book to one and all, and very, very highly. It is a true feast for the mind.

It's not surprising that 12-year-old Iqbal Masih, the Pakistani carpet boy turned child-labor activist who was murdered in 1995, inspired works for older readers; a picture book on the same topic, though, raises the knotty question of age-appropriateness. As in Francesco D'Adama's novel for middle-graders Iqbal [BKL N 15 03], Shea alludes to the real tragedy through a fictional character, Nadeem, an indentured slave whose chance encounter with Iqbal, and later the news of Iqbal's death, galvanizes him to defy his master and lead the children in his workshop to freedom. Shea doesn't shy away from ugly realities ("coughing blood" and "cuts healed over with boiling oil"), and four dense pages of back matter, including sobering United Nations estimates of children in the global workforce, contrast tellingly with the unguarded optimism of the story's ending. Perhaps most useful for introducing the topic to groups older than the usual picture-book audience, this problematic yet thought-provoking picture book, with earth-tone watercolors brightened by decorative borders, will leave children asking questions that have no easy answers. One Persons Journey Through A World of Books Thoughts:

Occasionally I will open a book and be startled by what I am reading. My main character is Nadeem. He works in a carpet factory in Pakistan. His parents sold him into child labor three years ago and he now works seven days a week from dawn to sundown seven days a week.

And that is just page one.

At this point I go back and read the inside flap of the book and for the life of me cant recall knowing that this is what this book was about. And now, I am ashamed I took so long to review it as obviously there is an important message within these beautifully illustrated pages and as I read I try to imagine this book being read to or by those who the book is meant for - grades 3 - 6. It is making me take in a deep breath... what would an 8 year old think?

As the book goes on page by page I am witness to Nadeem's life, weaving rugs day in and day out with the occasional glimpse of the outdoors when he helps load the rugs onto the trucks.

While the story is fictional, it honors a real boy, Iqbal Masih who escaped from a child labor factory and through his work he was able to liberate thousands of child workers like Nadeem. Iqbah had been sold into child labor at the age of 4 where he wove carpet for 12 hours a day for six years until his escape. He learned about the laws against child slavery and began to work to help others. Iqbah's work won him the Reebok Youth In Action Award and recognition at the International Labor Conference. Upon Iqbah's return to Pakistan after these recognitions, he was fatally shot while riding his bicycle. He was only twelve at the time and he had already made an impact for children all over the world.

The book made me cry to think of all the injustice out there in this world. While my own children have been given choices all there lives, there are so many areas where this is not the case. I will treasure this book for years to come and every time I look at it on the shelf I will remember a boy I met within its pages called Iqbah.

Time for social justice

A very moving story of a boy working in a carpet factory who helps other children realize that they have options for improving the conditions under which they work. Children's version of a true story that ends in the murder of the boy. For children, the story ends before that and conveys the importance of people helping others to take risks to better their conditions in life. I bought it for my first grade granddaughter who is very concerned about others. We were also able to discuss geography of Pakistan and the surrounds.

Great anthology about men with all different types of bodies -- and, oh yes, BEARS.

You know what I like? Anthologies with blurbs that list each story with a mini blurb attached. This particular anthology doesn’t have that, so I’m going to do it for you, the readers. You're welcome.

Author B.G. Thomas, who along with Anne Regan is the editor of this anthology, starts things out with his personal story of coming out bear. Like many men he doesn’t live up to the gay standard and had a hard time connecting with men when he first came out. Eventually he discovered his place amongst the bears. It’s a great introduction to the anthology but what I liked most about it was this statement:

[T]he one thing [bears] have in common is we aren’t hung up on what most of gay culture, or the world for that matter, qualifies and quantifies as hot or sexy. We are beautiful and sexy in our own way....Because that’s what being a bear is all about. It’s more than size. It is accepting ourselves and each other for who and what we are.

I love that. It’s something I hope we can all relate to – man, woman or bear. Mr. Thomas is the author of "Summer Lover."

Truck Stop by Christopher Hawthorne Moss 3.5 stars

Cleve and Sully are recent veterans of WWII. Sully’s a truck driver who frequents Cleve’s Gas and Grub. They get to know each other better when a snow storm hits the area, trapping them together. Anything about war veterans seems designed to make me teary-eyed and this story is no different. Moss is the author of "Where My Love Lies Dreaming."

Bear Chasing by Renae Kaye 3.75 stars

Neil is a geeky, skinny guy (naturally) who lives with his sister and helps take care of her three children. Imagine his joy one day when three studly bears move in across the street. However it’s Brett, the biggest bear of all, who captures his interest. Another sweet and funny story from the author of "The Blinding Light."

Life’s Tiny Surprises by Tara Spears 3.25 stars

Mac is celebrating his 30th birthday alone at his favorite Italian restaurant. Mac won’t be lonely for long, however as twinky waiter Jerrod has quite the crush on him. This is a very sweet story with a definite HEA. Tara Spears is the author of "The Darker Side of Trey Grey."

The Bear King of Snowbird Mountain by Michael Rupured 2.5 stars

Two men meet in Washington DC and immediately get down and dirty. One looks like Kevin Sorbo with a lot more hair. Not my thing but there is an interesting paranormal twist. Michael Rupured is the author of "Happy Independence Day."

Just Breathe by John Genest 3 stars

The Valentine’s Day after losing his boyfriend, Will has to take an overnight CPAP test (study for sleep apnea). His night gets a lot more interesting when his sleep technician, Les, turns out to be the exact type of bear he likes best. Extra credit for making me tear up at one point – also, whoever thought of finding a date during a CPAP test? John Genest also has a story in "Tales from the Den: Wild and Weird Stories for Bears."

Barefoot by Lillian Francis 3.5 stars

Finn volunteers at a homeless shelter and has a crush on Sam, who works at the local supermarket where Finn finds cheap food. There’s a major misunderstanding which would’ve been annoying in a longer book, but was pretty cute in a short story. Also nice was the British setting. Lillian Francis is also the author of "Lovers Entwined."

Golden Bear by G.P. Keith 3.25 stars

Norm’s roommate's gone, leaving him all alone in a big house when a storm hits Toronto. Things start to look less lonely when Norm meets Hydro worker (and bear cub) Winston, who may not be as straight as Norm thinks. This is a sweet story about body image and the nature of attraction. G.P. Keith is also the author of "Out in the Back Woods."

Banyan Court by Samuel Scott Preston 3.75 stars

Dan, a 60 year old professor, returns home to Hawaii for a vacation where he meets Hank, a 30 year old surfing instructor and Iraq War veteran. Can Dan overcome his insecurities to accept Hank’s love? I found the vulnerabilities of both characters moving. Samuel Scott Preston also has a story in the anthology "Dr. Feelgood."

The Bear at the Bar by J. Scott Coatsworth 3 stars

Dex is everything a gay man is supposed to be – beautiful, built and hairless where it counts. He’s also an arrogant jerk. After nastily turning down a bear at a club, imagine his surprise when he wakes up in a bear’s body the next morning. I liked this story although at least one action after he switched bodies still bothered me. Still, a great start for who I believe is a first time published author. You can find J. Toby is 20 years old and not quite out, maybe not even entirely out to himself. He’s drawn to Wolf, a hot sounding and monosyllabic older man who he often sees at punk clubs (is that what you call them? Clearly I have no idea what I’m talking about). Not something I’d normally read, there is some drug use, but just so well done. I really enjoyed it. Zoe X. Rider is also the author of "Puncture."

The Bear Next Door by Jack Byrne 3 stars

Bryce has a crush on his neighbor, Rob. Just as their new relationship is going well, Bryce sees Rob with another man. Can their relationship survive a Big Misunderstanding? This was a pretty cute story that takes place on a ranch in Australia. Normally the Big Misunderstanding plot point would annoy me, but it’s fine in a short story. Jack Byrne is also the author of "The Billabong."

The Bear Fetish by John Amory 3.5 stars

Robert’s a closeted, New York corporate lawyer visiting Albuquerque on business. First in need of food and then in need of a strong drink, he wanders into a club on Bear night. There he meets artist Louis. Can Louis teach Robert to be more open and less guarded? This is a charming story that also deals with Louis’s Zuni background, which I enjoyed. John Amory also has a short story in "Please Don't Feed the Alligators."

The Do-It-Yourself Guide to Getting Over Yourself by Robert B. McDiarmid 3 stars

Bill has recently been dumped for an adorable twink. His friends arrange a trip to Palm Springs in the hope that a good screw will help his moping/bitterness. There he meets Arthur, who may be of great help in that department. This is a funny story but it’s put together oddly. It starts in the present, jumps back to Bill’s vacation, jumps back to Bill’s roommate, then jumps forward to the vacation. I had to go back to the beginning before deciding that it wasn’t a romance, but a story about Bill getting over a past romance. McDiarmid is also the author of "The House of Wolves."

Hunting Bear: A Fairy Tale With a Very Hairy Ending by Edmond Manning 4.25 stars

This is a wonderful story and I feel like an idiot trying to sum it up in one sentence. Nevertheless...this is the story of Tyler, a young man in Chicago, pursuing a hot bear with the help of his friend Derrick. There! Now you know. This is my first Edmond Manning read and I will be coming back for more. Manning is also the author of "Filthy Acquisitions."

My average score for this book doesn’t quite reach 3.5 stars but I’m defying mathematics and rounding up to 4 stars. Some stories are better than others (naturally), but they’re all enjoyable. And I just love the idea behind this anthology. Listen, I love pretty boys and hot men – I love muscular, hairless bodies with brooding bedroom eyes. But I get tired of seeing them or reading about them over and over and over again. There are all different types of bodies and all different types of men in this book and I enjoy reading about each and every one.

Great Anthology of Bears

It’s great to have stories concerning the beloved but hardly exposed bear culture of the gay community. All of these stories are different but follow a similar theme of praising the small part of homosexuality that involves large, hairy and masculine men. There’s a great mix of stories that contain humor, romance, drama or combinations of the three. Some are more subtly sweet while others are openly erotic. The editing is great and everyone involved in contributing the stories to this anthology is worthy of praise.

A Taste of Honey is collection of short stories dedicated to the bears. Polar bears, chubby bears, ginger bears, otter, cubs, the list goes on! Each story was unique in its own right a was dedicated to presenting a little more knowledge about bears themselves. I really enjoyed this anthology. It opened my eyes to a whole new world of gay culture that is so different than the mainstream body builder, perfect physique, twinks, etc. If I were a gay man, I would want a bear!

I love the introduction. It was so open and honest while being entertaining and informative. It was a great way to start this anthology.

This collection of authors presented gay men in everyday situations like having a sleep study completed, working at a homeless shelter, or living with a sister and her children. Not just in CEO positions, at gyms, or in the clubs. This shows the less than glamorous side and shows them as regular people with insecurities of their own. I love that idea. They are just like everyone else, just with more hair!

I love that the short stories did not try to do too much. Many of them were just about bears meeting and getting to know each other with the promise for more. I also love that the theme of this anthology was a type of person instead of a type of story. It allowed each of the stories to be very distinct while also being connected. Many anthologies lose my interest because things get stale or overly redundant. This was not the case for A Taste of Honey. I easily read this in one night and loved every minute! I highly recommend this one, even if you traditionally do not enjoy anthologies.

Good read, recommended for all aspiring leaders of any kind.

Great book, easy to read, good reflections and an extraordinary woman. Looses one star for all the formatting errors and the unsupported Table of Content.

I will remember the chapters about social companies, the reflections about relationships and the 13%.

There need to be more people like Anita, in the business world. Real, raw, vulnerable, fearless and different thinking, she nicely captures the essence of being human while conducting business. I gave this book to several of my managers as a Christmas gift.

I loved this book. It has helped me get rid of a lot of perfectionist tendencies that were often blocking me or making life more difficult than it has to be. This book is helpful for all modern professionals, and especially those with families.
