The Long and Winding Road to Pluto

As Dr. Goldsmith was researching this book, he was in close contact with many of the key players in the study
of Pluto. It was a pleasure answering his questions, and considering his "what-ifs?". Mike showed me some
early copy which allowed misconceptions or little mistakes to be corrected. Mike has a knack of being able to explain
the technical concepts of one field to those not in that area of research. And his interleaving of the concurrent
evolution of Pluto-based science fiction is a twist that gives the layman a break from the gory details of a textbook.
Pictures and graphs are well-chosen to illustrate the concepts being explained, many coming directly from the scientific literature.
Mike kept an on the "human element" throughout---the scientists and engineers who got us to Pluto. In the once-tiny
Pluto research community, how people interacted, collaborated, disagreed, and moved on is important. Who was a graduate
student under whom, and how they moved on to become faculty and leaders in the field in their own time.
The book is entertaining, informative, and a well-balanced view of what we knew about Pluto before the New Horizons
encounter, and some of the first-look results of the mission. Mike did a great job writing a book that would not immediately
become obsolete when the ink dried.

A book for all readers

I approached this book with some trepidation not being a scientist or an astronomer. I was soon drawn in however. Dr Goldsmith engages the reader with his use of amusing anecdote, forays into literature and wonderful graphics. He wears his learning lightly but that does not detract from the weighty subject matter. For those who wish to know more about this fascinating field , past present and future this is a 'must read'

I gathered a lot of useful information for my paper

I had to write a research paper on Pluto for my Astronomy Lab class and I wanted information that was new and fresh since the New Horizons' flyby this summer. This book is very informative with up-to-date data. I was engrossed reading about the discovery, the demotion, and the encounter of this dwarf planet. I gathered a lot of useful information for my paper. Great read!
