About the Author
Robert Powell was born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, in 1918. After obtaining his doctorate in chemistry from London University, he pursued a career first as an industrial chemist and later as a science writer and editor in Britain and the United States. Robert Powell's personal exploration of spirituality began in the 1960s, and his quest for self-discovery led him to Zen and a number of spiritual masters including J. Krishnamurti and Ramana Maharshi. His own spiritual awakening coincided with his discovery of the teachings of Nisargadatta Maharaj. He is the editor of a Nisargadatta trilogy, and the author of a number of books on what he describes as "human consciousness transformation." Powell now lives a busy life in La Jolla, California, with his loving wife, Gina.

Chapter 32 ETERNITY IS EVER NOW

The cause of man's spiritual dis-ease--our identification with the body--has been amply investigated and confirmed. But, it seems to me, we must retrace the diagnosis one step further and ask ourselves: What really is that body which serves as the underpinning for the "me"?

Is that body fundamentally "real"? Once we have asked those questions, they must be seen to be inseparably connected with another, even more basic question: To whom is that body "real" or "unreal"? That question reaffirms the old dictum that without knowledge of the perceiver, the self, no problem can be approached in a meaningful and fruitful way. Without such self-knowledge, we are doomed to go around in circles, and all "answers" will only throw up further questions.

The body brings with it its own special and limited consciousness--seems to envelop it, as it were. This consciousness is totally dependent upon, and the product of, the body's sensory functions. Commonly called the "mind," or the "ego-consciousness," it acts like a center to protect and foster the body's interests. This activity then extends itself, creating a psychological dimension as the more general "body-mind" sphere of interest. In this is created not only a physical, but also a psychological separation, commonly experienced as the "me" versus the "you."

Now everything that is perceived, experienced, understood, interpreted and felt is done so by the body-mind entity, and by nothing else. This is logically, inescapably so. The content of man's consciousness is totally within the sphere of body-mind. Therefore, it is the body--or more accurately, "body-mind"--that is examining the reality of "body," and can such an entity have a meaningful answer? If the answer is "yes, the body is real," this signifies only that the body affirms its own reality--according to the yardsticks of reality that only the body possesses. Is it not like saying: "I exist, because I say so"? But a denial, "Body does not exist," would be equally meaningless once the entire process has been understood correctly as a kind of special pleading, or a circular argument. At this point, one may well ask: "Who is it that understands the process correctly?" It is still only body-mind, of course, but this finding spells the emasculation or silencing of body-mind. This leads to a transcendence from which emerges the fact that "body" is essentially the product of its own projection, the expression of its own limitation or basic Ignorance. With (and from) that body comes from the "world" of our experience, which springs likewise from that primordial self-projection. Thus the "me" and the "not-me" are swallowed up by the Void, and all our challenges, desires and fears are now seen as self-projected. But because this process of self-projection remains unrecognized for what it really is within this internal self-projection, mental tribulations appear and are experienced as very real. And mental suffering can only continue so long as identification with the self-projected entity persists. Our conclusion then is that identification with "body" is tantamount to identification with a mirage. Space and time come about only through and with "body." If we are not the body, we are the Void which has produced the various mirages but in itself is timeless and spaceless. The idea of the before, now, and after is as much part of the mirage--it spells the end of our linear thinking as the rock of our existence. What is called "Eternity," an infinitely long time period, is ever Now, an infinitely short time period only. Our real nature is Immortality, for what is called "death" is the disappearance of something that never had any real existence in the first place. What is does not even acknowledge "life" and "death" as mutual exclusives. My true "I am" is birthless and deathless.

About the Author
Aristophanes (ca. 446-ca. 386 BC), son of Philippus, of the deme Cydathenaus, was a prolific and much acclaimed comic playwright of ancient Athens. Eleven of his forty plays survive virtually complete. These, together with fragments of some of his other plays, provide the only real examples of a genre of comic drama known as Old Comedy, and they are in fact used to define the genre. Also known as the Father of Comedy and the Prince of Ancient Comedy, Aristophanes has been said to recreate the life of ancient Athens more convincingly than any other author. His powers of ridicule were feared and acknowledged by influential contemporaries - Plato singled out Aristophanes' play The Clouds as slander contributing to the trial and execution of Socrates although other satirical playwrights had caricatured the philosopher. His second play, The Babylonians (now lost), was denounced by the demagogue Cleon as a slander against the Athenian polis. It is possible that the case was argued in court but details of the trial are not recorded and Aristophanes caricatured Cleon mercilessly in his subsequent plays, especially The Knights. "In my opinion," he says through the Chorus in that play, "the author-director of comedies has the hardest job of all." He is also known for some famous sayings, such as "By words the mind is winged."

Translation with wit but without true character of original

Alan Sommerstein went to some length to translate the puns and plays on words (as further explained in the endnotes), which results in a very active play, and, for the careful reader, wit in nearly every line. He also uses the endnotes to explain further the Greek personalities mentioned in the plays, which adds to the understanding; my recommendation would be to read the play straight, then read the associated endnotes, then reread the play in question.
This translation captures the humor of the original, which ranges from low-brow slapstick to witty one-liners to political asides--a union of vaudeville, Oscar Wilde, and Mark Russell. However, what Sommerstein utterly misses is the form of ancient Greek comedy. The lyric choruses are rendered in choppy iambic lines, with many of them set to tunes from Gilbert & Sullivan. Aristophanes meant to use vulgarity in the acting, not in the lines of the Chorus.
Two stars for verbal wit, two stars for completeness of endnotes, and one star for my love of "Lysistrata", minus one star for excessive use of campy tunes.
(For those of you who do like his translations, or those just looking for the other eight plays, they are contained in two more volumes. Sommerstein collaborated with David Barrett in the volume Knights/Peace/Birds/Women's Assembly/Wealth, while Barrett translated Wasps/Women's Assembly/Frogs. Barrett takes less care with the translation of humor, but does not destroy the credibility of the choral lines.)

the father of western comedy...

Brilliantly written and translated (quite a feat considering the many word-plays in ancient Greek...), this book (or any of Arsitophanes' plays for that matter) is a 'must read' for the humourist and the classisist combined. When the King of Syracuse asked Plato what he should read to understand how the average Athenian thought, he was instructed to read Aristophanes. You will be fascinated to see just how 'modern' the humour is, or, as the introduction explains, how 'ancient' our modern comedy is.

'The Clouds', inlcuded in this volume, is the imfamous play that Plato criticised Aristophanes over after the death of Socrates: he claimed that the parody of his teacher helped those who secured Socrates' death. I'd like to think Socrates did not concur. It has been reported that he bowed in good humour after witnessing the performance. Also, 'Lysistrata' is often used as a proto-feminist story - although it is much more interesting than that. Ancient Greeks have, as one of their chief virtues and downfalls a drive to be self examining and critical. It gives todays social relativists plenty of ammunition. Those that use it as an anti-war/peace-at-any-cost story, when it is actually against civil war, have not studied Aristophanes enough, or are prepared to ignore what doesn't work for their cause...

Aristophanes with Tact

I have used this book repeatedly for my classes on women in antiquity, mostly out of habit. Professor Sommerstein's translation is extremely readable, but he is such a gentleman that the really flagrant double entendres of the Greek in "Lysistrata" and the "Acharnians" often pass unnoticed, or must be teased out of the text; and because they have often been rendered into a Scottish dialect, they must be explained. And when humor has to be explained--especially Aristophanic humor--it loses something of its ribaldry in the process of explanation. Nevertheless, the book makes for reading that is painless, pleasant, and usually terribly polite.

About the Author

Justin Martell is an independent filmmaker and writer. Considered 'one of America's foremost experts' on Tiny Tim, he has consulted on and contributed liner notes to two posthumous Tiny Tim releases, I've Never Seen A Straight Banana (Collector's Choice, 2009) and Lost & Found: Volume 1 (Secret Seven Records, 2011). In 2013, he put out a previously unreleased Tiny Tim track on a limited-edition Edison wax cylinder, which Time.com dubbed the 'most retro record release ever'.

Alanna Wray McDonald is a poet, writer, and freelance art director for film and television. She resides in Iowa and Brooklyn, New York.

Over ten years in the making, this book is the definitive history of Tiny Tim and his unique place in popular culture. Incredibly detailed, Martell has left no stone unturned documenting not only the height of Tiny's success but also the early years of struggle and ridicule and the later years when Tiny toiled in obscurity. Riviting from start to finish, I can't recommend this book enough!

Tiny Tim fans [as well as popular music aficionados] rejoice! At long last, THE book about all things Mr. Tim has arrived, and we are the richer for it.
From his New York beginnings where the seeds of musical interest were planted by endless hours of listening to crooners from the turn of the [last] century to a long, hard climb up the success ladder in Hollywood and beyond to his final years of working and living in the mid-west, Mr. Martell and Ms. McDonald have exhaustively chronicled the life and times of the 'eternal troubadour,' as the late Martin Sharp called him.
In one volume, the authors have gathered together the recollections of dozens of insiders, along with Tiny Tim's own unique perspective on his life and times.
It is a journey through a short, fully lived life that I suspect will become THE source for the last word on the wonderful world of Tiny Tim.

Tiptoe through a lifetime

This is the definitive life story of Herbert B. Khaury aka Tiny Tim. It chronicles every aspect of his life from the beginning to the end and draws on interviews from those who knew him best. I was born in the mid eighties and I must admit I was creeped out by Tiny Tim as a child. If you only know him for his #17 pop hit, I encourage listening to some of his music or better yet, watch some videos on YouTube. The man was an encyclopedia of music knowledge and was extremely talented. I don't think you'll find a better book on the subject matter. What an amazing life.

This big book shows, convincingly, how they're connected--both historically, and in the present. The text includes stimulating essays on the history of colonialism and modern medicine; well-wrought ethnographic case studies on gender, race, and sexuality; and content-based theory (i.e., theory based on some empirical evidence). An indespensible resource for courses in gender, sexuality, lesbigay studies, and critical race studies.

Given there are no other books written on this subject matter, this publication is needed in the industry … . There is continual pressure on the solar industry to reduce cost and, like the electronics industry before it, solar companies will continue to integrate low cost polymers to reduce their costs.
